Looking at a few different tillers for my Kubota B26. I am only using it for a 50x25 garden, so at most it will be used twice a year. I was looking at the 40" and 48" models. Is gear driven better then chain? They all have a slip clutch and 6 tines per rotor. Not sure what else I should be looking for. Anyway these are the brands that I am comparing: Hawkline by Behlen, Tarter and Phoenix/Sicma.

Hello Carl Burt, There all pretty good brands. Hawkline has been around for a long time, Tarter tiller is fairly new but seems to have good reviews, the phoenix/sicma is french for, I'm the tiller other major brands put there color and name on. All good choices.

Chain or gear.... I lean towards gear. But for twice a year use, chain is more than ample. I know two out of the four tillers you mention are gear driven.

Slip clutch is best. Should not be any other options in my opinion:D

I would go with the 48" wide to cover tracks better also.

Out of the four tillers you mention, I would buy the one that I could get the best deal on:)

Slip clutch is really a must have on tiller's especially in rocky NY.

You may want to look at one with offset capability if you have tight spaces or are tilling close to the edge of something.

We have a TSC KK gear drive 6' tiller and have been very satisfied.

Most folks on TBN seem to like whatever tiller they have so I don't think there is just one best. I have the 6ft King Kutter II and it has done a very good job for relatively cheap money. I'd recommend it.

I think if you buy one of the brands you named you would not go wrong at all. The KK is also worth looking at. I ended up buying a tonutti tiller, made in Italy and is a mirror image to the Sicma. BUT the price was the reason I bought mine...

Ok I got a few prices. First from Sweetractors on this site. He quoted me $1495 for a 48" Hawkline, $1595 for a 48" Tarter, and $1595 for a 48" Phoenix/Sicma plus delivery.

Second place I checked was "everything attachments", also on this site. they had the 48" Phoenix/Sicma for $1495 and free delivery.

The third place was my dealer, who carries Woods and Land Pride. He wants $2500 plus tax for the 44" Woods and said the Land pride was about the same. On top of that, he told me that the 3PH went up from $400 to $500
