Which direction does Ford 2N front spindle dust seal NCA1190A go on?

Which direction does the seal (NCA1190A) get driven into the hub on my 2N? Does the rubber lip go against the spindle or against the bearing cone?
I have read in other sites the rubber lip should be against the spindle but the picture seems to indicate it goes against the bearing cone. Just want to be sure. Thanks


It is item 6 in the diagram.

Here is another diagram and it also seems to indicate the lip goes toward bearing.

Just from my experience with bearings/seals, and looking at the diagram, I would imagine the metal backing would face the tractor.

Thanks for reply... I have been searching now for a few days and turns out the answers have been evenly split. Some say it is a dust seal so put lip toward tractor and just as many say put lip toward bearing. Kinda amazed that I can't find a definitive answere for this question. It is a common question many people ask. Thanks again for your input.

Yeah, I can see it from both perspectives. I just pictured the assembly butting up against a steering yoke, therefor it must face inside. Plus in the first diagram, it looks like the lip is facing inside of the assembly. I am by no means familiar with the 2N though.
