Which End\'s Up??

When installing 6" PVC pipe does the bell go on the high end of the trench or does it go toward the low end of the ditch?

Re: Which End\'s Up??

Always lay bell up (with an open bell waiting for the next stick) so that you can jam the next piece into the bell which is laying on the dirt. The other way would have you raising the soiled plain end to get the bell under it. Your joint would be dirty and you would have to lift two pieces at a time.

It really doesn't matter if you are not using a choker and hoist for each heavy stick. It matters when putting in ductile iron water main since the gasket is rubber and needs to be pressure tested.

My ditch is 150 feet long

I am installing 2 10' joints of 6'' PVC pipe at the top end of the ditch.
I am putting 3 10' joints of 6'' PVC pipe at the bottom end of the ditch.

For the 100 foot space between the top and bottom sections of PVC I'm using a 100 foot coil of 6'' flexible pipe

I am using Fernco style fittings to connect each end of the flex pipe to the PVC.
This works OK for the upper end of the ditch as the PVC bells will face up the ditch.
However connecting the flex pipe to the PVC on the lower end of the ditch reverses the direction of the PVC causing the Bell to face down the ditch instead of up it.

Any suggestions on how to keep the bells on the PVC heading up stream at the lower end of the trench?

Re: Which End\'s Up??

Cut the bell off if it won't fit isndide the fernco. Chainsaw will do it.

Re: Which End\'s Up??

i agree. the only thing i wil suggest if you cut the bell off is- dont just cut the bell off. cut about a foot of the pipe off including the bell. that way you dont waste the bell. you have a short extension piece should you run a foot short on your job. this has saved my butt many, many times when hooking up gutter drains.

hacksaw, pvc saw, or sawzall will work great as well.

Moved to Related Topics since this thread has nothing to do with Owning/Operating a tractor.
