Watch your temperature gauge and you will know when you are asking too much of the tractor. Are the blades on your mower sharp? I have two brush hogs. one is for mowing trash and it is not super sharp and the other is strictly light field cleanup of grass with 0 rocks, sticks and dirt and I keep it sharp.
When you mow, is the uncut grass to your left and you will cut it again with your next pass (assuming the rotates in a CCW direction)? That will add load but will chop the grass to a finer. If it is just to knock rough stuff down, keep the uncut to your right. There are a number of threads on how to set the angle of the blade on the forum.
Does your tractor have a two speed PTO. My L2550DT has a two speed PTO and I can mower light stuff in the higher speed with lower engine RPM and that cuts down on fuel. My IH584 has a single speed and the RPM's have to be higher.
Is it a new unit with good blades? I had one unit lose a blade and that (likely 15#) blade traveled a considerable distance and the out of balance state almost threw me off the tractor. Lift the unit, secure it from falling and check blade tightness where it swivels on the bolt.
Finally, keep everyone away from the mower. Not just a few feet away but a LONG way away. These things can send debris flying quite a distance. Had a man a few miles away knock his old 8N into gear as he got off with the blade still turning and the tractor ran over his foot and the brush hog followed cutting his foot off just above the ankle. Take nothing for granted as these things can be very dangerous.
