OK,
Finally got a new house built in SC, near Charlotte NC for reference. I've got about 2 acres of planting to do. Here is my problem: It will be very hot soon there and it's also been dry. I don't want to live on a red clay dirt farm all summer waiting for cooler/ wetter weather before I plant some seed, but I can't water that much grass either. So, what should I plant?
I know certain grasses thrive in hot/dry weather but they turn solid brown in the winter so I'm not interested in that.
What I really need is a seed that stays green all year, and is somewhat heat and drought resistant.
thanks from the red clay universe.

Brett, I can't think of any grasses that will not need water and stay green especially if you factor in the time that it will need to germinate and establish itself. While many grasses are more drought resistant then others, none of those can establish themselves without considerable watering in the heat. Even bermuda will need water to germinate, some hybrid varieties stay green much longer and green up faster. You purchase those as sprigs, not seed.

Brett,
Bad timing for a new yard in our Southern climate. If you have to seed now then this late in the season Bermuda is most likely your best bet. If you can till it all under in the fall then a cover crop now would hold the soil and add some organic material to the clay. Check with the local feed stores and see what they say for your area.

Why don't you try a Perennial Ryegrass for now. It will germinate in about 6 days and should tie you over until fall.

I think this stuff would grow on a rock !!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I have used lots of it on red clay and never put any type of mulch on it and it germinates nicely.
