I have 6 acres of grass on a narrow valley floor. Spring snow melt and rains run thru the valley. i'm having trouble keeping grass alive, particularly areas which has new grass planted the summer before.
Question: Of the various grass types - blue, perennial rye, fescues- is better able to come back after the stress of water runoff. I've leaned toward fescues. Blue requires too much to get started -- good soil prep, lots of watering, etc. Ryes are rugged, but the plants don't spread by root propagation, so a field of mature rye tends to have individual clumps with bare area in between. Also, fescues seemed like the better choice because they're supposed to be more shade tolerant. But is my problem that I'm expecting too much of fescues?
Thanks
Jim
