Which is better 60" or 72" mower deck??

I'm in the process of buying a ZD 331 and was trying to decide between the 60"/72" deck. Only have 2 small areas that I would have to push mow or weedeat if I bought a 72", (just a small area between my land scape and 2 trees,could even add them into the landscape and not have to mow that area), but I will be mowing, 1.25 acrea and 1.50 field every week, the land and yard has got the normal bumps and rolling slighlty
Are there any major pro's and cons to either,and it's only like 500.00 difference, any info or opion is appriciated

The wider you go the more likely that high spots will get scalped or that valleys have long grass in the middle.

The bigger the deck the more you mow with each pass.

I have a 60" deck on my BX and mow a very undulating yard with peaks, valleys, ditches, beds, roots, moles, trees, and all manner of other challenges.

Only the first time or two of mowing do I recall anything being "shaved". That probably would have happened no matter what I mowed with, new lawn and all.

I can honestly say that I couldn't imagine my yard looking any better after cutting. There aren't any scalps, digs, steps, mohawks, stragglers, or other evidence of a degraded cut using such a wide deck.

Granted, you're talking about yet another foot width, but on a ZD, you could overlap tracks with far more efficiency than I. Acutally, I do overlap about foot or so on each pass. And on the flat stuff, you could cut clean to the edge.

Unless every tree on your lot is 66 inches apart, I'd go with the 72" deck. Without question.

I have a 60 inch deck on my Kubota 326.From what have I seen the 72 inch deck scalps to much.coobie

The other consideration is storage and transport. Do you have a trailer wide enough for that 72 if you have to transport it somewhere? What about parking it in your garage/shed? What's the cost difference to replace the blades?

The 2 decks are identical other than the width, and blade length. The bigger the deck, the less passes you need to mow. The mower has plenty of power to handle it. It really is just personal preference.

If I had to go to a second mower for the smaller areas I'd be taking the 60" deck!

So you might save ten minutes in the big areas but now you just added another engine to keep running and the room for that!

I do like big decks so don't get me wrong, there are many ways to mow and you might scalp one way but be fine another!

i had a b2400 with a 60" deck -- and went to the zd331 --

-- and was contemplating the 60 or 70" deck --

the dealer suggested the 70" deck, and i am soooo glad i did it --

i mow 3 acres in 1 hour -- and the lawn looks better than with the 60" -- less passes = better looks --

no scalping issues -- just keep the deck wheels adjusted per the owner's manual --
