Chevron has always had a reputation for the best GASOLINE additive package.

I've been told on many occasions that Shell and BP made the highest quality diesel fuel.

No, no difference.

As someone pointed out - branded gasoline has proprietary additives and that can make a difference - But from what I have seen diesel is pretty much diesel..

Now in winter time the amount of kerosene added may vary by terminal. Some majors also have different cetane ratings on their diesel.. Im not sure how cetane numbers are adjusted - IE is it an additive OR the way the diesel was manufactured..

If you notice at some Exxon stations the gasoline pumps are very 'branded' with the exxon name - but the diesel a lot of times is under another canopy, and the pumps may not say 'exxon' on them but just day 'diesel'. My understanding was that the diesel was just diesel - NOT an Exxon specific diesel.

thanks

Fuel, both diesel and gasoline, can be proprietary but only if the fuel comes direct from a refinery or a proprietary distribution terminal. This is rare but it does happen.

Otherwise, it all gets mixed together at a non-proprietary pipeline distribution terminal. These tank farms don't have a tank for every brand of every grade of fuel so they can't maintain brand identity. One or two million+ gallon tanks for each grade of fuel is typical.

Locally (Roanoke, VA), I've seen Sheetz, Exxon, Citgo, Pilot, and unbranded tankers all filling at the same fuel distribution facility.

Doubt there are many additives in diesel to make much difference which brand you buy. In gasolines, all the majors generally mix their additives to meet the stringent BMW fuel injector cleanliness standards. Not sure what the story is in the diesel area.

I know Exxon sells probably about 2/3 of its products to "3rd parties", both fuels and lubes. Think some may buy the additive packages. Others do their own.

I don't know why but in my gmc diesel I get the best mileage at BP, Citgo and Shell. I have tried mobil and Exxon several times and have gotten 10% lss fuel mileage four or five times I've filled up there. It might be coincedence I don't know. For off road in my Kubota I have never noticed a difference.

That's true.

CITGO is about the lowest quality you can get.....
