Don't let Mike pull your leg! A 4610 would do just fine.

I can highly recommend the 455. It meets all the requirements you listed. Perhaps my favorite feature is the three cylinder Yanmar diesel engine. I have just never been around a small engine with this kind of power. It has exceeded every expectation I had of it, and it still surprises me after nearly a year of ownership.

You can find a good used one for 4000 to 6000 depending on features, hours, and accessories. If you're looking for something a little older/smaller/less expensive, its predecessor, the 430 is a beast, as well. For a spark plug model, the 400, 420, and 318 get a lot of respect. For something bordering on antique that will still work itself harder than you can imagine, look for a 140 -- that will be the next addition to my collection. I saw a stock one out pull tractors 20 years newer and heavily modified at the county fair this summer.

For background info and an active forum on the subject, check out http://www.weekendfreedommachines.org. The classifieds there are probably the best marketplace for a clean used machine you could possibly find. Many of the regulars build museum pieces out of wrecks and sell them for enough to get started on the next one.

My first JD was a 1974 140, it's still running and my Son uses it, hydro, no 3pt lift. Not sure what the going price for a 140 is but they are pretty much an antique now. My Son bought a 420 which is considerably bigger with a 72" deck and 3pt for $2250 last year.

My second JD was a 1990 322, gas, 3cyl Yanmar, hydro, 3pt, pwr str. My second Son is using it now with 1500 hrs on the meter and no major repairs. great unappreciated tractor. Smooth as glass, great power. A good one will bring $2500 in the midwest.

My third JD is a 2001 455, diesel, 3cyl Yanmar, hydro, 3pt, pwr str. I bought it last year used with a 54" deck, 54" hyd front blade for $4750 in the Midwest. It's my favorite. As jeffinsgf said, it has awesome HP to weight ratio. I filled the rear tires and have chains for pushing snow. I also have a homemade 3pt box blade, angle blade, tote box, tandem disc. It's a great tractor that bridges the gap between a garden tractor and a CUT. Mows my lawn like a champ and within a couple minutes is converted to a hard working SCUT. I really loved the 322, but the 455 is just better, stronger and uses less fuel. I don't expect to wear this one out. Am attaching a picture of it with it's bigger cousin.

You can't have a garden tractor if you don't have a garden!
