I'm curious about this mainly for the ongoing efforts to properly diagnose my tractor. My dealer says it doesn't have one but they also don't know the proper way to time my injector pump so I really have a lot of faith ya know.

I keep hearing about people with smaller tractors than mine having computer problems and am just curios. I haven't been able to locate a data port or any computer boxes on mine so it probably doesn't have one. I hope. I'll be ticked if I bought a tractor where the company doesn't release the software to repair one at home. Car companies got nailed over that years ago. They have to release all the diagnostic programming for scanner makers to use now after a certain amount of time. I have a really good OTC scanner but they do not even offer any software for NH tractors.

Your TD has no computer. Each new level of EPA off-road emissions regulation lowers the HP threshold that all but requires electronic control of fuel delivery rate and timing; but they aren't quite down under 100 HP yet. Computers are used on tractors your size and smaller to control powershift and powershuttle transmissions as well as traction management systems, climate control and perhaps other functions. New Holland, and so far as I know, all off road equipment manufacturers hold their software as proprietary. Whatever rules and/or case law the automotive industry is bound to concerning releasing software to the aftermarket clearly does not apply off pavement.

That's good to know. And true about the proprietary thing. I'm not intimidated by computers at all. I'm actually pretty good with them. Good enough that the dealer I quit working at 2 years ago still calls me all the time to diagnose problem cars. With what they pay their mechanics now they don't have much PCM literacy I guess.

I just can't imagine owning a car or anything without the scanner and the proper software to diagnose it myself. We've been stuck on Ford Powerstrokes for several years now and I have the scanner and everything I need to work on them. That software package also covers just about any other car or truck with a computer too so I'm always looking at neighbors cars now. Most car dealers charge a flat rate of 75 bucks just to plug in a scanner. Not many people can afford a breakdown these days.

Most of the computers in sub 100 hp tractors are proprietry too, the Deutz-Fahr Agrotron I was looking at has an engine management computer with a data port. The dealer has a serial port to Deutz cable he can plug a laptop into but they don't release the pinouts or software to diagnose.

Ugh... each computer is different and the equipment to work on them is crazy expensive. I am sure you could buy it... we pay several thousand for each system.

I think I paid about 7000 for my OTC scanner and have had to upgrade it several times to the tune of a couple thousand each time. That sucked! And everyone always wonder why it costs so much to get your car worked on! I never should have been required to buy mine really but I was running a shop where the owner was a serious penny pincher and had an old outdated scanner like the ones someone at autozone would use. It's hard to get much work done like that. Plus it saves me a lot of money now. I HATE going to another mechanic for anything! I've only had to do it 5 times in my whole life and all five were recently with my new tractor. They aren't even smart enough to fill my power steering reservoir back up after they had the line broken.

Hey MessicfarmEqu: Are you able to ask something for me to one of your mechanics? If so I am still wondering what that big solonoid is on the inboard side of my injection pump. Not the fuel shutoff but a bigger one with linkage connected to a shaft sticking out the front of the pump. I've never seen that on one before and am curious. I've never seen it move yet and really wondering what it is there for. It's a TD95D 07 model.
