I'm thinking about getting a PTO generator, mostly for when I need some power 'way over there' on the ranch (welding, lights, etc.). I don't really need it for house backup power. I really like the idea of a PTO unit, so I don't have another motor to keep up. Any suggestions out there? Price is important, but I usually look for quality first.

Thanks

For the uses you state I'd suggest a 27.5 KW PTO gen. NorthernTool has one for $2149. However, it will require a tractor with 48 PTO HP. It can handle 200A @ 120V and 100A @ 240V.

If you don't have a tractor that large they also have a 13 KW unit which only requires 24 PTO HP for $1169. It will handle 100A @ 120V and 50A @ 240V.

TSC and other farm stores also have PTO gen's.

I believe folks saying that you need xx tractor hp to run a pto genny are overstating the case. I run a 50kw Winpower with my 35hp tractor. Its doesn't even burp when the house AC units kick on. All you need is enough wattage capacity to run the basics for heat, water, a/c, garage doors, cell chargers, TV, microwave, video games and maybe a blender.

I suggest you get to a farm auction where one is being sold. A dairy farm always has a 50 to 75kw alternator for water, grain drying and milk parlor operation. The Winpowers often have 3phase taps, too. Yeah, they will commit a 100 hp tractor to the job, but you don't really need that much grunt on hand to run that unit. Remember: I have one. I am underpowered (theoretically), I use it for all kinds of jobs (even portable welding and pressure washing). But the tractor has never even dropped 20 rpm momentarily during any usage. I sure have no inclination to buy a 110hp tractor "because its a 50kw genset". (BTW: Its an ALTERNATOR). The surge requirements are well handled by the rather large rotating inertia. The rest is all steady state rpm maintenance.

Think of it as a 1500 AH battery for which you only have 650 AH battery cables for use on an ATV. That pretty much covers it. The auction prices are usually 2/3 of new. Make sure you get a trailer for it. Hauling it over to your relatives in an emergency is worth some points, especially if they already have a tractor. Just tow it over with something having a hitch...

Check out IMD they advertise here on TBN now. I got a 10 KW last year, they seem well made. and they offer a nifty carrier that really makes it quick to hook up and go.

There ad is the second one down when you hit the discussions tab.

IMD, welcomes all Tractorbynet Users!

electrical load for the most part is what determines ptohp input needed. ( yes.. a 13kw and a 70kw gen head are gonna have slightly different parasytic losses due to mass... but for comparison sake.. a 35hp tractor should turn a 10 and a 30kw genny putting out 5kw just about the same.. etc.

to the op.. I have a northern tool ( north star? ) 12.5kw genny.. had it for? 5 ys now.. love it. have run it with anything from antiques to newish tractors, from 24-95 hp...

I bought a 12kW Northern a few years ago, been happy with it. Mounted mine on a small trailer as opposed to 3ph carry rack. Makes it easy to roll around the shed by hand or pull to someone's house behind the truck. If you buy a self powered portable, think about where you'll keep it. I think that just putting a tarp over it outside would lead to condensation problems and corrosion. Probably have to build a little dog house for it. You can move into the dog house if you spend all that money and it won't start when the power goes out.

At 7.3 cents per watt, This one is reasonably priced. Parts can be easily obtained and you can download the manual before you buy. 15 KW PTO gen

I bet it's made in the same country as the ones from northern, heck just about everything is made there anyway. If I were to get this one, I would weld skid skis to the legs just in case I tried to drive off without lifting it.

A lil pricey.. but not astronomical.

I have mine mounted to a pallet that is then mounte don a carry-all. give me lots of choices to move it, as the pallat can also be transfered and locked into my 4x8 trailer.. etc...

one thing I like about a smaller footprint is storage.. I can just lift my genny off and set it in the garge on the carry-all and then drive the tractor out.. theus the genny doesn't have to live outside. Now.. if you got a large barn with lotsa space.. the trailer only method is great too.

post some pics of your setup
