Its time to rent a mini again. At this time the only rentals available are a Thomas T35 and a John Deere 35C. Both have thumbs. About 1/4 of my total work will need the thumb the rest is just surface work, loading small dump truck, finish grading, replace a culvert, etc.

Anybody have experience with Thomas excavators? Both machines are same price in rental fees and just about equal distance to transport (I will do that myself).

The JD 35C is a ZTS machine as the Thomas isn't. My work really doesn't require a ZTS machine.

Any thoughts??

I have used the JD 35C before this summer. Also used a Kubota K121-3. Both rental units.

Thanks

I've got no experience with the JD unit but I've rented the Thomas T35 and used it. I found it to be excellent at digging in loam and in clay. I used the Thomas for a couple projects that included digging a long wide trench, as well as for some precision digging up of concrete fence post footings without tearing up surrounding bushes. I actually have thought about buying the unit.

If you have no need for a ZTS I would not use it. Most people who run those do for the clearance issues. I've heard a few complaints about them not being well balanced.

It comes down to personal preference. if there is difference in dig depht, or bucket size that could help make up your mind,I have operated both and both are good machines. zts is perfect for working next to a house or any building .

According to the specs I found the T35 has slightly deeper dig depth, slightly longer reach, slightly higher dump height. Also the T35 has 2 pumps 1 piston and 1gear. The 35C has only one. The T35 blade is slightly narrower but taller.

I have never seen a Thomas excavator. Tomorrow I will look at the Thomas when I go by the rental yard.

When I used the 35C ztr it did feel more tippy over the side of the tracks compared to the Kubota 121-3 I rented. But then again I'm comparing lemons and oranges /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I would have torn the h___ out of nearly everything I came near with anything other than the 430 ZHS Bobcat I have. You just cannot BEElieve how easy it is to swing that bugger around too fast and whack something you value /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. Sure it compromises the capacity a bit, but for me, 'twas worth it! And my 430 can dig, tear up, beat down, rip apart, etc!

I did order a counterwt for it, to be installed soon for more dig capacity.

Love that AC.
