I get the most out of my 28HP Ford 1900, I am thinking upgrade. I have 85 ac in NoId, and I use the tractor for everything: ground maintenance, incl. roads, snow plowing, auger, backhoe, haying about 40ac for myself and my neighbors, and bringing logs to my sawmill. The ford 1900 is puffing and barely handling the job.

I am thinking new or fairly new tractor, about 40HP, 4wd is a must, with FEL. I have about 17 implements already. Major brand or other for about 20K. What is your advise?

A popular "orange tractor" in the Hp/price range is the no frills Kubota L4400(DT) for less than $20K new with a loader rated at 1550# at the pivot pins... Gross HP with a 134.1 cu. in./ 4 cylinder engine 45.3/37.5 @ PTO. It also has a dry single stage clutch. If you look in the (REVIEW) section at the top of the page; there may be some testimonials on the performance. It is a tough tractor!

John Deere also has the popular "no frills" JD990; but I have no info on the cost or performance, but their website will give you all the info including cost. Good luck!

Maybe consider just a few more horsepower. It may make it much easier for some of the jobs you are doing.:D

It sounds like you are getting more than your money's worth out of the current tractor!

I would agree with the L4400 and JD990 suggestions. I would also consider the Kubota MX5000 and look for a closeout deal on or a slightly used JD 5105, which would do everything you're doing very easily. If you have a Kioti dealer nearby I'd look at the DK45 and DK55 models.

I appreciate you responses. I had no clue about the model names. There are so many.

More HP would be nice but the bigger tractors are not maneuverable in the woods. There are no logging roads in my forests.

You mentioned Kyoti, is it a reputable make?

And what about older models, what are some of the model names?

Is there any site listing the many models on the market, and older ones?

A lot if info here on TBN or look at TractorData.com - information on all makes and models of tractors or Used Tractors at TractorHouse.com: John Deere Tractors, used farm tractors and farm equipment, Case IH, New Holland, Agco, Caterpillar.

If you have a Mahindra dealer close by, take a look at them. Specifically, the 4110, 4530, or a 4510 Cab (if you're interested in a cab).

The 4110 is a 41 HP/34 PTO HP. I have a forester/wildlife biologist friend that runs 2 or 3 of them in his consulting business. He's the reason I checked out Mahindra before buying my 2615 4WD. He loves them for his forest clearing, food plot prep, herbicide spraying, etc., and works them hard.

I haven't priced any of the 40+ HP Mahindra tractors, but they'd be worth a check if you have a dealer close by.

The tractors already mentioned (JD990, Kub L4400, Kioti DK45) are, from what I've read here, fine tractors that would likely suit your needs.

Good luck,

BR

How about doing a yellow page (or internet) search for all dealers within a distance you would be willing to drive to for service/parts, then check them all out. Each manufacturer's web page will have a dealer locater to help you out. To find the different brands just look through the various forums here on TBN. Go to each dealer within your driving radius and go from there. You will quickly narrow down what you're looking for and will be able to ask more specific questions for whatever catches your interest.

Ragan Equipment in Cour D'Alene ID has treated me fairly, (ask for Tony) that is where I bought my tractor. The Kubota/New Holland dealer in Cour D'Alene is also willing to spend some time with you explaining options. I think he has another dealership in Sandpoint (don't know how far north in Idaho you live). When I was looking the closest Mahindra dealer I could find was way down in Pendelton OR.

For what its worth my recommendation is to do test drives preferably on your place but if that is not possible then right at the dealership. Tractors like a 990 are really pretty nimble. If you like hydrostatic transmissions then look at a 3720 or equivalent in the other brands. You'll find one that "fits".

Good luck
