One other question I have: do those who have used or had both the Rhino and the Ranger know which one pulls better? I have some trailering to do on my property and want something that will feel stable and handle the weight. The Gator I had, as I have said, was not fast, but very strong when pulling. I do not know how either machine I mention compares with a diesel Gator in the pulling department, but it seems the Gator would be more on par with a Kubota RTV for this, not fast but very strong. It would also seem on paper that the Polaris would be the better puller due to its physical size and weight, but the ultramatic tranny might offset that some. Also, what is going on with the parking brake on these Rangers? They all seem so loose to me. Are they all that way?

i was comenting on the durabilty and reliabilty of the rhino and polaris. there are post all over the internet of people who own them stateing that they breakdown and they just plain break!no offense dargo but you seem to be one person that doesn't have problems with thier rhino. and the polaris has issues too!! just as bad as the rhino!if anyone has any questions to my honesty just do some searchs ain't that wath the internet is for.now if i had the money i wouldn't mind havin a polaris with an extended warranty i like them.but i read up on their problems . but for the money to me a rhino just ain't worth it .thats my opinion. i can shut down the server on this web site with all the problems i can find on the machine. now dargo if you love them rhinos then you love them rhinos but don't try to tell people that they don't have issues.if you get one just remember to put some plate under the floor boards becase a stick came through the floor of my buddys and went right into his calf. that plastic just don't hold up to good.and to think yamaha claims that the rhino has a full under body skid plate.lol well they forgot two key spots. so watch out for stumps and sharp sticks.i think it was a total of 12 stitches.but whos counting.(stick) with a polaris if you ain't gonna get a rtv or a hpx

OMG! That would hurt! Theres no way a rhino would survive what I put it through I run my HPX onto rocks and big stumps all the time and go fast over large branches. We've been cutting firewood a lot the past few weeks and just leave behind what we don't want and it's been building up in the area we have been cutting. I go over them and I know they hit the underside real good. Got to love all the metal JD puts on these things.

You may have read that one of my friends has a Ranger and he rides it at my property with me. I have driven his unit several times. It looks spartan to me for some reason, but I do like it's soft ride - unless it has a load in the back. Since I have some really extreme hills (where the Gators and RTV's simply run out of power trying to climb - 3 different RTV's, 2 6X4 Gators which came the closest, and 3 HPX's) and I've seen that the Ranger seems to climb slightly less than the Rhino. I think the Ranger has some sort of automatic 4X4? Anyway, he starts spinning too soon and there are a couple of hills I can climb he can't. The big difference, which you alluded to, is the Ultramatic system of the Yamaha. I didn't know that the Ranger just free wheels down hills if you are not standing on the brake or, counter intuitively, on the throttle. I recall that the Gators also had this problem.

As you may have guessed, since I've owned everything but the Ranger, I completely discount what the two HPX nuts here say. I'll let you make your own judgment there, and you need not comment. I just consider the source. I'm glad they like their HPX, but I don't tie my entire reputation to any particular unit of any type. By the way, I've also seen on a Google search that there is thousands of pages that "prove" that Elvis lives and that no planes actually hit the twin towers. On the HPX, you've had one as well, and you know that they are a good capable utility and work unit, but will not keep up on the trails with the units like the Rhino and Ranger. There are dozens of Rhino units around here and I really don't see anyone having trouble except when trying to jump the unit, or run the trails at 50 mph and hitting ruts and logs. If I took my RTV at those speeds or any of the Gators I’ve owned at those speeds over extreme terrain or tried to get 4’ of air with them, I’d expect the same. Honestly, on the Ranger, my friend's Ranger mostly has had electrical bugs. I like the EFI quite a bit more than a carb as well. Hopefully Yamaha puts the EFI from their Griz on the Rhino and JD puts EFI on the gas HPX and ends it’s cold start issues related to carbs. I guess that’s why only the first JD I had was gas and the last two diesel. :)

Although my friend and I have joked about tying the Ranger and Rhino up tail to tail and having a tug of war, common sense prevailed and we never have. Contrary to what the two fellas who are determined to get you to buy another HPX believe, I honestly think that the Rhino will pull every bit as hard as the Ranger even though it is physically smaller. I would say the only issue I'd possibly be concerned with would be going down a hill and trying to stop a heavy load behind you. However, unless you want to go up to the one ton weight of an RTV, you'll get that. Even then, a big enough trailer will push anything around. I’d say your decision would be whether you want the higher performance and maneuverability of the Rhino or the technical advances, but higher potential for problems, with the Ranger. I see the EFI and larger bed as the positives for the Ranger. The Rhino is more powerful, has a true 4X4 system and is more agile. As I said, I’m going to buy another UTV or two as well. I even drove the new Artic Cat Prowler last week. Although I liked it's looks, I was unimpressed overall. I think I’ll wait and see if Yamaha comes out with EFI this winter or in the spring and I’m fairly certain that I’ll buy a new RTV1100 this spring with the factory cab. I’ll have the new addition on my barn by then or add yet another barn. You know, a guy can’t have too many toys! :D

What I find funny is how me and tommy have never said we were better then a rhino or a ranger on the trails. But rather you constantly discredit the HPX reasons to which you never back up. We never did get a picture of those hills the HPX couldn't make it up or better yet a movie of it happening. I'm sure since you have all these "toys" you have a camera right ?

I really like the RTV too. I just do not think it will quite fit the bill for me. I really liked my Gator diesel and it would climb a tree with the aggressive tires I had and its four wheel drive system, but among the problems I encountered was that it had so little suspension travel that it would lift wheels constantly on uneven terrain. I also want something with slightly more top speed, hence the desire for one of these two machines. I found the gasoline Gator to be a little low on power, but not the diesel.

I have had a Rhino for a year and a half and it has been perfect. Honestly, I think all the big players have great units (HPX,RTV,Ranger,Rhino) Some just fit with the buyer's needs(fit, function, price) a bit better. I would just pick the one that fits your needs the best.

Gee, I don't know if I'm supposed to feel insulted or feel sorry for Tommy. Let me guess, first off he is short, got picked on in school, finished school before they taught spelling and grammar and his 386 didn't come with a spell checker. I guess I really feel sorry for him because I can't understand what he is trying his best to convey other than he reeeeeeeeeealy likes his gas powered HPX and feels that everyone should be so lucky.

I see no point in bothering with any reply since the original poster has already owned a more powerful diesel HPX and, although it was a fine unit, it was not what he needs for his specific purpose. I have not the time nor desire to debate an irrelevant topic with someone who is extremely difficult to understand and whose concept of a steep hill and challanging terrain what would be for a utility ATV and utility UTV, but not for units made for such terrain.

Oh yeah I remember seeing that picture. I think anyone who owns a gator let alone a HPX knows you can make it up that easily. Heres a video of some of the places I've gone. Putfile - Gator rough

Cool video Darkday. I think that diesel may be faster than my gas burner. Everyone needs one of each utv imho. They are all good. My buddy has a jacked up golf cart that I thought was the coolest thing for years. It's all about fun~! :)

Hi there jcmseven, I've got to throw in my 2 cents worth, now that this topic is getting all heated up. Well I was wondering if you had an arctic cat shop anywhere near you? If so go and check out the Prowler, it has a reece style hitch on front and back, 4 wheel independent suppension, 650 cc engine with and automatic choke (love that feature), a fairly large dump box with a pickup style tailgate, a top speed out of the box of 52 mph (some of the guys are getting close to the top speed of 60 now that their's are broken in, the ride is very good, the xt model is by far a better deal than the standard model (only $500 more) the seats are comfortable, the attachments that you can get for them is almost unlimited, you can pull the hitch plug out of your truck (2") and put it in either the frt or back, the snow plow system goes on and off very easily, the dash on the xt model has a clock, 2 trip meters, reads out in mph, or tach, or kph, and has a fuel gauge, plus the xt has nicer wheels and tires and a front diff. lock, and the trans has high and low range and has engine breaking feature that is really nice when going down steep hills, it also has cv joints on the axles, 600lb load cap, 1500lb pulling cap. you can dump the box from either side of the vehicle, and they come in red, green and lime green. You should at least check them out if you can, you just might be impressed. The selling price up here in our neck of the woods is $10,550 otd. for the XT model. Since I retired from my job of 30yrs almost 2yrs ago I've got to the point of needing something to do to keep from going nuts, I didn't want to ever turn wrenches again (30yrs of that was enough) and didn't want to be working at a job that was boring etc. I went over to the local Arctic Cat shop and was getting atv trail stickers for the dirt bikes and I started looking at the new cats and thought to myself "man they've come along ways in just the last few years. I've always had polaris products but after looking at the cats and riding them around started to wonder hummm the next thing I did was to start working there selling them. I'm still not a 100% cat man but I'm impressed with them just the same. I'm also not saying that they are better than any other brand out there or worse, I'm just saying that maybe if you can, just go look at them as another option. Well there that's just my opinion and everybody usually has an opinion. Have a great weekend! Let us know how the shopping goes.
