Which way is right?

I recently purchased a CC LT 1046. It has the 23 HP Kohler Command in it. When I check the oil in it I screw the Dipstick all the way back in. I also own a 2000 Honda Rancher ES. I was told to not screw in the dipstick in when I check the oil in it.

So my question is: Do I screw in the Dipstick or do NOT screw in the Dipstick when I check the oil in my Cub Cadet? I have been screwing it in because I would rather it be a little too low than a little too high. Or does this even matter that much with the difference between the two?

My manual makes no statement about which is correct.

I'm surprised your manual doesn't tell which way to do it; I've seen manuals both ways for different engines, but I'm not sure which is right for your Cub.

on my garden tractor which has a 20hp kohler which is the same setup as your 25hp my book say's do not screw it in when checking oil level.

OK. I found it. It says, "Wipe the dipstick clean before pushing ALL THE WAY back into the oil fill tube. Withdraw the dipstick to check the oil level."

I guess we can take that as screwing it in all the way to check it.

I know this sounded like a pretty green question but, I just want to take care of my investment.

My nephew has a Craftsman tractor with a 25 HP Kohler Command, and that manual says "push the dipstick in, do not turn". You probably pick up, what, 1/4" to 1/2" of extra stick by turning it in the whole way, so, you could be getting an incorrect reading, and be running it under-full. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif You might want to double-check with your dealer's Service Dept. to make sure.

You can also find out for yourself which is the more accurate measurement the next time you change oil.

Drain it all out, refill with the specified amount of oil, then check it both ways. One ought to register closer to the full mark than the other.
