hi there,

does anyone know off hand the HP at PTO on a 1601d? I want to buy a wood splitter and they are saying minimum of 15hp at PTO... but, with that said, could less HP still run the splitter, albeit slower? thanks!! -Arthr

arthr31,

The first two digits on the YM series indicate the PTO HP...as in your case, 16.

Thanks, Mark. . . Now that you've written that, I remember reading it here before... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Thanks again.

Arthr,
Most important is hydraulic flow when running a splitter.

Figure the volume in gallons of the cylinder, then the flow on your pump and see if it will be fast enough. The flow will be rated in cc/rev, but that isn't hard to convert. We put a splitter on a YM1510D once and it was really slow, even at 2400 rpm. It had plently of power, but took 15 or 20 seconds to fully retract or extend the ram. That seems like hours in practical use.

These tractors run loaders fairly well, so you might assume they will run a splitter just fine, but you are usually looking at a pair of 1-1/2 or 1-3/4 inch rams on a loader. Two 1-1/2" rams require only about a quarter of the flow that one 4" ram requires to extent/retract at the same rate.

I think I am anbout to confuse myself, so I better get back to work!

Thanks, Dave. I had thought about that too... I was concerned that my hydraulics wouldn't produce enough GPM flow to operate the larger cylinder. However, the way this splitter works is that it has it's own pump and 10 gallon tank which is powered by the tractor PTO. The pump on the splitter is supposed to be powered off a PTO running at 540 speed so I would think it should be acceptable, correct??? Thanks for the input.. -arthr

p.s. either way, slow or not, my tired hands could use the help! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
