I have been experiencing a whining sound which seems to be coming from the hydraulic pump located on the front right side.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I'm wondering if the pump is nearing the end of it's service life.

My tractor is a 2001, and only has ~550 hrs on it....all residential, so pump failure doesn't sound likely, but youmay know more than me...?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Whining has been correlated with air leakage into the suction of the pumps, through knocked hoses, loose fittings, missing o-rings etc.

There have been several threads talking about severe case of this problem.

Pump whine and cavitation are often confused. The follow can apply to most rotating pump assemblies:

Pump whine is constant and due to worn or damaged bearings, seals or rotating parts rubbing the housings. They will whine all the time.

Cavitation is caused by air leakage, worn out fluid, water in fluid, restrictions in the intake or filters, etc and will cause damage to any pump over time. Cavitation will be heard mostly when under a load. Cavitation is the suction pressure reduced to the vapor pressure of the fluid and the resulting vapor pockets collapsing when forced into the discharge pressure. The force is enough to cause a sound/vibration and also to errode the parts that are doing the pumping. Usually the rotor(s) and housing.

So does it whine all the time and if so is it worse under a load?
Have you changed you hydraulic fluid and cleaned or replaced the filter or screen?
Does the tractor sit outside and could water enter the transmission/sump?

Tell us how you determined the whine to be coming from the hydraulic pump. Could it be the power steering pump? They are both in close proximity to each other.

Also tell us if the whine is constant or if it varies with load on the pump. Run your 3PH up and down and also the loader if you have one. Does the whine change?

Your tractor uses a common sump for the HST and the hydraulic pump. Both the HST and the main pump draw fluid through the main hydraulic filter located on the right side under the platform and near the right-rear wheel. If you were getting air in the main pump, I'd expect to see problems with your HST also.

Have you checked the fluid in your power steering reservoir? If it is low, that could be the reason you are hearing noise from the area of both hydraulic pumps.

Finally, run your hand along your hydraulic lines under the right side operator's platform to see if the sound changes. Often, whines are really just vibrating fluid lines. By running your hand along the lines the noise may be reduced or go away completely. If so, you just need some damping material somewhere to stop the noise.

Good luck looking for the source. Your hydraulic pump should be just fine. Many of us have over three times the hours you have, and the pump works fine.

When was the last time you changed the filters?
I assume you checked the fluid levels...

What were you doing when you first heard the noise?
And how long ago was that?
