Just old fashion and I like to feel what the nail is going in to. It doesnt take all that long to drive a handful of nails when you've done it for 30 years.

I understand. My Dad was a carpenter for 40+ years. I sometimes wonder how he would have taken to nail guns, compound miter saws, lasers, and all of the other devices available to today's carpenters.

I'm with the group that likes the pine and spruce. White pine isn't my favorite because of the white pine blister rust that takes out some every year. Also the scotch (or scots pine as some call them) isn't a great speciman when it get older. It grows fast however so it makes a good tree if you need a quick filler. Just plan on getting the chainsaw out when its about 15 years old.

But a stand of 20-30 foot white spruce or black hills spruce is as pretty as it gets. Here in the north when the others have dropped their leaves its the conifers that give us some color and protection.

In Minnesota, a fresh snow on top of the spruce is christmas card quality. I can't imagine a view out my window without them. And further north, in lake country, the tall pine and spruce on the lakes is scenery at its best.

I like a good stand of oaks, maple and the others as well as anybody. But the pine and spruce have to be included. Sure there are the needles but I just got done with the first round (there is about 3 more rounds to go) of vacuuming the leaves around my mom's maples. I enjoy her maples but at leaf dropping time I'd rather have the spruce.
