Don, you are correct, it will fit , however your mounting (lift)
arms my be different and can run into $$ The M00297X series
was used from the late 80's to the late 90's on both x55 and x70 series tractors. It was a very good deck.

I'd go to Deere's parts on line reference and pull down the various exploded drawings. Clearly shows what parts are needed for what models. If this deck was used on a different model you might have to dig around a bit and print out the equipment lists for both.
I bought a used 60" deck from a 955 for use on my 855. Came without any of the mounting hardware, so I used the partslist / drawings to figure out what I needed. Brackets cost more than I paid for the deck, so I fabbed my own using the pictures and a unit at the dealers lot for reference. But wasn't hard to figure out it would work.

Thanks Guys. Here's an update:
I have the deck (Ebay) on it's way here in a few days.
I also have a fellow who can sell me most of the bracketry left over from his swapping a deck from an 870 to an 855.
I'm going to the JD site now to try and figure out what I'm missing.
