Who here burns corn?

Mt Father used corn during the 29/32 depression since there was no money and corn didn't sell. he had a normal coal stove and just used the coal scoop to toss into the stove. The clinkers he had a iron bar to break up then take out with the ashes. I remember that it would ignite like some one had tossed gas on the fire.
Today at 6 to 7 a bushel do you grow your own supply.

did for a couple of years but figure now it is just cheaper to go with straight pellets.

I have the same exact stove mine may be older though I have had it 6 seasons now still works great.

We like it when corn is affordable which it sure wasn't last year or this year so we haven't ran it but once for a few weeks when it was real cold this year on pellets.

Which isn't near as much heat as corn but its cheaper plus we have a couple tons pellets on hand in the garage year around.

I built a 48 bushel grain cart on wheels out of an old horse drawn Gleaner combine bin. I fill 5 gallon buckets with the chute and bring in the house.

I will post a pic of it tomorrow for the heck of it anyway makes buying corn in bulk at the coop easy or even right out of the field.

I do and have the same stove as you. When corn was around $5.00 I bought enough for this year about 100 bu. Mine heats most of my shop and runs 24-7

I did once but after that I learned to to soak it in water and leave the husk on while grilling:D

We all do in our cars. Corn based ethanol has driven up corn prices so high that is tough to feed cattle these days.

We have USSC model 6033 for about 10 yrs. now. I despise mowing lawn so when our last son went off to college I plowed up our back yard and planted some Bloody Butcher corn along with a roundup ready variety. The open pollinated corn got to be 14 ft. tall! Our middle son is 6ft. and we have a picture of him in front of it,the ears were so big we could't get them trough our sheller that runs on an old craftsman electric motor.I pick it by hand and mix it with grass pellets.

I'm in Oregon, so pellets were $140 a ton a couple years ago, and $240 a ton this year. Besides transportation costs, I think it's a supply and demand thing. There's a big mill a few miles down the road that just went into the pellet business. They are only making 50,000 tons a year now, but plan to ramp that up rapidly. Because of the housing crash they are not making as much lumber as they used to, so they have to make custom sawdust instead of just pressing a lumber byproduct. When the lumber market kicks back up, pellet supply should increase and drop the price.
