I only ever worked one Christmas day;started at 5:00 p.m at a paper-mill shut-down.Got to spend the holiday with family so not so bad.I tried to avoid paper mills because they were always down during the holidays.
Note;had a choice,worked as a construction pipe-fitter/welder.

I am fortunate that I have never had to do that. Furthermore, because I believe there should be days which people should be free to spend with their families I always have planned not to need anything from places which do remain open... That includes those of you in essential services; hospitals, emergency services, LEOs... I don't even speed on Christmas Day. :D

I do appreciate the efforts of the folk who do work that day,, though.

Holidays are stressful, family gatherings can be stressful. Not everyone wants to deal with that.
For many years I had a p/t job as a DJ at a local radio station. I usually signed up to work Christmas day, sometimes Thanksgiving too. Everything's automated now so there goes that excuse...

Bird, I can identify with you. You were better off than I was. I was raising 5 kids. I started as an industrial refrigeration fitter doing construction and service. Thought I was smart when I got tired of being on call for service work and went to straight BT Pipefitter. Old 235 (now 290) in Oregon. We could always count on Christmas, New Years, and thanksgiving for industrial plant shutdowns. Some of the companies had a deal with the union and the contractors association to offer shutdown work to those already employed by another contractor to work the duration of the shutdown. Often there were not enough workers available to staff a shut down even with round the clock work and an empty hall. Most out of work guys (by choice) turned down those calls. Big paychecks but tired bodies. 96 straight through at double time and catered meals. If you had to leave, don't come back. Sea trials on ships is another story for another day.

Years ago I started my work life in retail sales.
That stretch between ‘Black Friday’ and Christmas Eve was pure unadulterated he//. Usually off Christmas Day, but back at it on December 26 dealing with all returns and BS about broken stuff and cash refunds requested by folks who didn’t give a **** about the gift and only wanted the money to buy more booze.
New Years Day was inventory day so all hands on deck counting all the stuff that didn’t sell over the last year.
Before I left the retail rat race I got to the point I despised the holidays.
Thank god today that’s ancient history.
