Backhoe Who regrets their Backhoe Decision?

I was reading all the replies to the "To backhoe or not?" thread in the attachments forum...and it seems like everyone said yes, do it...

After two years I remain SO GLAD I bought a backhoe with my tractor! For all the reasons anyone who has a backhoe knows...

I'm sure there are one or two "regretters" out there.

Willing to share your story with us?

Richard, it must be because I want another, larger one as well. My smaller one for closer work, and a great big one for other jobs. That way, I'd have to buy a LARGER tractor to handle the new BH. Then I could buy... John

Guess I have to be the dissenter, here. I don't regret my "no backhoe" decision. Oh, sure, every once in a while I get a twinge of "Gee, a backhoe would work here", but never to the point of changing my mind about spending the money. I was never serious enough to get a firm price, but my dealer indicated that a New Holland backhoe would be in the $6,000 range; I've certainly never had $6,000 worth of regrets.

If I ever feel a compelling need for a backhoe, I'll get something like this rather than a tractor mounted unit. Not much more money, and, to me, much more versatile. In the meantime, I'll continue to rent a mini excavator or a large TLB if I can't do something any other way -- which so far, hasn't happened.

I hate to admit it but I purchased a 3PH mounted BL4690B over the BH90 at my dealers advice and against the advice of most on this forum and others. I like having the backhoe, I just wish I had the bigger one. Live and learn.

No, I've never had a backhoe, but I still can't imagine 6 grand worth of use for me or most home owners that I know. If I needed one, I'd rent a small trackhoe, but like OkeeDon, I haven't come to that need yet in 5 years. My tractor & implements get the job done.

I recently bent my hydraulic piston for the bucket curl and am waiting to get the replacement shipped in. I'm deep into backhoe withdrawal!
There are way too many uses for the hoe, and the FEL simply can't compete with the hoe for some tasks.
The alternative is a shovel and matic or rent a hoe or excavator. After a few rentals, you could have bought the hoe attachment and have been using it at your leisure! (of course renting a "real" piece of heavy equipment has the added benefit of giving you and extra shot or two of adrenaline into the ole circulation! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)
