Another good reason to spend a day and a half in the shop away from everyone else.

Had a full load (4 ton) on my 84 Dodge 350 cab and chassis, load stuck in the up position. Put her in low, and popped the clutch a little, and the back of the box hit the ground. Got a few dumb looks driving home from the transfer station. 1/2inch frame plates, some 1/2 inch flat stock, and a 10 lb spool of wire later, were back in buisness.

Did you have to square the frame back up? I had an old chevy dump with similar issues that was out of square by 3/4 of an inch, used the excavator, some binder chain and an oak tree to square it up, good thing no one was watching!

I just used the bed of the truck, after I cut the frame, the bed went down into the frame guides when I lifted the back end up with the forklift. I then used the hoist to bounce the frame back into position, and welded the plates to the frame.

4ton{8,000lbs} just a quess, but just maybe that is just a hint too much for the ole girl.

I take it you live in a state where they salt the roads or you drive it through the surf a lot? Time for some rustoleum on that old gal.. Otherwise the next time the whole box will be laying out in the road.

That style lift is very hard on frames. When the box is down it and you go to raise it you are trying to stretch the frame apart. I've had to rebuilt the lift on my international 2 1/2 dump because over the years it put too much force trying to dump 5 yard loads of gravel. That with a 2 1/2 ton dump truck holding maybe 7 tons or so. Putting 4 tons onto a 1 ton with a dump made for a 1 ton, I'm surprised you made it this long. Put the weld to it and paint it up and keep running it. Looks good.

Truck weighs 6100 empty, and spec on doorjamb tag (when new, before rust) is 13,900. Yes, maybe a little over, but not too terribly. Have had 6 ton+ gravel on her, and she never complained before. Shes 27, in dog years, that's 189. What is it in truck years?
Can't beat a dodge with a 318, 4.56 rear and a 4 speed granny. 227,000 miles

Crazyal, I know what you mean. We had a 74 IHC 1700 grain body truck with the double frame. It was actually blistered thru the inner frame when we got rid of it 5 years ago. The frame was spread over 3/4 inch, and the back section behind the rear spring hanger was 2" below straight.

I've got both a 75 and a 77 4wd loadstar 1700. Nice farm trucks but in this day and age of near $4 gas they only get occasional use.

Well, my 84 GMC c-60 with a 366 is no better on gas either, but you gotta do what you gotta do, and roof tear off has to be disposed of somehow. I would use the GMC all of the time, but it doesn't fit everywhere, and some people dont want a 12,000lb EW 30,000 full truck on their front lawn. I think my Dodge and the GMC get about the same mileage, right around 7 mpg. The GMC drives nicer, and has better low end power than the old IHC(345 gas). And, yes Wisconsin uses just a little salt on the roads. I had to repair the strut towers on my 2000 Dodge grand caravan this spring. The driver side had a hole in the top I could fit my hand thru.
