We recently had to replace the injector pump on our Ford 5610 (1988) and I was curious as to why Injector Pumps are so expensive. We spent $1500 on the thing, but the tractor runs better than ever. The tractor had 2800 hours on it when it lost all power and we had to replace it.

Thanks!

They operate at high pressures so very precise machining is required.:D

True, but another factor is replacement VOLUME.
By comparison an injector pump for a similar year GM 6.2 diesel truck or suburban was about $350 several years ago.
This might have been for a re-built unit, I don't remember, but re-builds are less likely to be available for low (sales) volume units.
Just not worth the re-builders setting up for a few units.

Even so w/ automated machining youd think the cost would be driven down.

Did they tell you what was wrong with the old pump? Were you running ultra-low sulphur diesel in it or regular #2 fuel oil/diesel?

I have heard of recent pump problems in older tractors due to the ultra-low fuel available in service stations. It doesn't really damage mechanical parts of the pump but can cause seals to shrink and minute pieces of neoprene to flake off causing clogging on Roosamaster pumps. Ultra-low started to appear in service stations late 2006.

They didn稚 tell us what was wrong with it.

I believe the fuel was regular #2 Off Road Farm Diesel. We have a 300 gallon tank that we store the fuel in on the farm so its whatever the oil company brings out for farm diesel. We were also using a gravity fed tank for a long time that was around 25 to 30 years old and to our knowledge had never been cleaned. We finally replaced it three years ago and all sorts of gunk came out of that old tank. I kinda think that may have also contributed. :(.

The head mechanic at the MF delaership I use told me last week that they are seeing problems with diesel fuel not having enough lubrication. The new low sulpher is supposed to have a lubricant added to it(according to him) and some of it has enough and some doesn't. They are seeing more pump failures and pump problems recently.
