Why binders?

"if the winch malfunctions in any way......disaster strikes"
We can put that in a lessons learned column. Guess that's why I was trying to clarify what you were writing.

That's exactly why I mentioned it in my very first post on this thread 6-26.

"I still toss a safety chain on the front end"

It's just my "belt AND suspenders" mentality. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I use pull over binders. One post suggested using bungee cord to hold the handle, while this would work I wire the handle to the chain. Talk a small amount of wire and tread it through the eye in the end of the hadle and wrap it into a link and tie off. Never comes loose. I have a bud that thought this was me being to safe. He had MY tractor on his trailer and did not do this. When he go home, both biders had over centered and released. Good thing I made him set the gears and parking break.

Binders are great pieces of gear when used correctly.

I use a 1" wide strip of self adhering Velcro. Run it through a link and around the handle.

MLB,
I use a combination of one lever binder and one rachet binder.
Use one on the front chain, and the other on the rear chain.

Mine come loose more often that I would like and are a minor pain to use

Use wire (ala higgy) or Velcro or...and they won't come loose. Use the lever binder on the first chain you place. Make it easy on yourself, throw the lever on the binder (and secure it with wire, etc.) with a little slack in the chain. Then, use tractor power to take slack out and tension the chain. Set the parking brake with the chain nice and tight. Finally, place a chain at the other end of your tractor and tighten it with the rachet binder. Now, everything is snug and you are ready to go.

How is using a binder on the back that way any different than using a chain through a grab hook and then tensioned? (assuming the pull from the front as well)

Sounds like a good idea. Using a grab hook instead of the lever binder might work really well. I don't know if grab hooks are weight rated like chain and binders are, but you would think they would be as strong as the chain they are "grabbing".
Does anyone know if grab hooks are rated? If they are, I'll turn my lever binder in for a grab hook. Thanks for the idea MLB!
