Looking at Kubota's website but can't find any reference to the L3940 HST that people speak of.

I am looking at the L3400, but would like to know the differences.

The Grand series comes with a better seat and computerized driving panel, adjustable three point hitch that makes connecting your implements much easier, available mid PTO which you need if you will be mounting a sweeper, snowblower or mid-mower, different gearing in the transmission, synchronized manual tranny that allows you to shift on the fly, shrouds over the valve stems (prevents knocking them of when you slide into the ditch while plowing snow - Don't ask me how I know.) There's probably more differences but these are what comes to mind now.

My first tractor was the L3400 which I had to sell because I needed a front mounted snow blower. When I purchased the L3400 the salesman tried to pursuade me to get a Grand L but I didn't have enough tractor smarts to know what he was saying. The Grand L series is a much nicer tractor and I really like my L3240. I'd love it if I hadn't got used to the extra power of the 3400 first.

The 3940 is not an equal to the 3400 (it's quite a bit more tractor). The 3940 is a heavier tractor, that could be a plus or a minus depending on your plans. The loader is able to handle more and I would guess lift higher than the 3400. I also think the 3940 is a bigger frame (could be wrong). The 3240, 3540, and 3940 all use the same loader so depending on what your plans are you may want to look at the 3540 as it'll be closer to the 3400 HP wise. If the extra HP is of value to you and you plan on doing plenty of heavy lifting with the loader then you may want to look at the 4240 as well, it's slightly bigger and the loader can lift higher and more.

But the HP difference is only 1.5hp.

L3400 is 35.7/26.6
L3240 is 34/25

Do you really think it made that much more power?

The difference between the 2 tractors is only around $2K and it sounds like you get a bunch of stuff for that $2K. But stepping up to a 3540 is about 5K over the L3400 so that may be stretching the "wowness" factor a bit.

Something to look for when shopping for a Grand L40 series is that there's
different models floating around. There's -1, -2 and a -3, the -3 is the newest
and in the case of the L3940 it's the only one with the swivel seat and few
other items. I found this out the first day when I got on a -2 and found out
there was no lever for the swivel seat.

One dealer printed us out a Product Info Bulletin on the changes from -1 & -2 to a -3.

1. Electric over hydraulic PTO switch
2. A Swivel Seat
3. An upgraded Cab interior
4. Stall Guard Plus

We could have got a -2 for $200 less than the -3 but I wanted the swivel seat.
Some dealers might not point these items out because they want to get rid of
their older stock.
