On the new MF 1700M series tractors they went with a new engine and did away with the DPF and instead using the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst. Seems like Daedong is over complicating things by having a cooled EGR, the Catalyst and a DPF??

Off-road diesel engine manufacturers have to do whatever is necessary to meet Tier IV/Final emission standards.

Following summarizes cost to VW for exceeding diesel emission standards on their diesel engine cars. Not entirely germane, but somewhat so.

How much has Dieselgate cost Volkswagen?

About: Volkswagen AG ADR (VWAGY)|By: Yoel Minkoff, Seeking Alpha News Editor

The cleanup of Volkswagen's (OTCPK:VWAGY) diesel cheating scandal will cost the automaker €5.5B in 2018, around €2B in 2019 and €1B in 2020, CFO Frank Witter told Boersen-Zeitung.

Since 2015, the German group has paid more than €27B to settle investor and consumer lawsuits, as well as regulatory fines and remedies tied to resolving excessive emissions levels in its diesel cars.

27,000,000,000 Euros = $30,760,000,000 $/US

A cursory look shows that MF is using both a DPF and SCR systems on their larger equipment.

These systems can be designed and calibrated to have emissions below the regulatory limit, and generate emissions credits that can be used on dirty equipment.

I don稚 know if that痴 what they are doing, but it is likely.

A ninety thousand tractor can absorb the thousand dollar cost of advanced after treatment in the transaction price much more readily than a nineteen thousand dollar unit.

The banking and trading scenario has been used by industry fo at least fifteen years, and probably more. The EPA is ok with it because there is a 15% discount figured into the calculation, so the fleet average emissions of a manufacturer is actually lower, potentially, than the emissions of the products of a manufacturer that doesn稚 use a banking and trading strategy.

Also, emissions is calculated on a g/btu-hr basis. One 300 hp tractor, with SCR and DPF, calibrated under the standard, can cover up the dirty emissions, legally, of many 35 hp tractors.

I don't know about all that stuff, but I sure am happy with my 2008 DK45!!! I guess I will stick with it until it (or I) drop dead!

Also, a DOC does very little to control PM. The DOC primarily cleans up HC emissions, which hook up rapidly when injection timing is retarded to control NOx emissions, and compression ratio can’t be increased because of a smoke hook.

Diesel combustion and calibration optimization is like working in a box with walls constraining the engineer on all sides. Whenever you modify one parameter, it affects everything else. Banking and trading is just another knob on the optimization box.
