Why is HST so much better then gear drives at heating up the hydraulic oil then a gear drive? It seems that my International gets the oil somewhere around 165 to 170 degrees (it has no loader) whereas my L3830 bumps it up to about 190 degrees on it's hard worked days. Could the difference explain where the dreaded HST loss of energy is culminated?

Exactly. All "wasted" energy ends up as heat. It is not necessarily a problem if the HST system is designed for it.

UH-OH!!!

Here we go again!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Your prolly right about some of the HST power loss being in heating of the fluid.

Oh my...

I'm afraid some bias may be showing here Rat...claiming that the HST is better at heating the Hydraulic oil???

Those who are objective (like me... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif) would claim the truth is that the HST is worse than its gear brother at heating the oil, cause hot oil is not as good as warm oil... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hotter Hydraulic oil has to worse for the tractor than cooler oil right?

Strike one against the inferior HST!

How come I seem to always be on the side of the under dog? I got two HSTs and love them to death...life is tough sometimes, but someone gotta do it... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Not All of it ends up as heat. some ends up as noise - ie the dreaded hydro whine. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Where does that noise go... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I thought it turned to heat eventually... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I know when my wife starts making noise, it gets pretty hot around me sometimes...

(I mean when she wants me to do some chores... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif)

Rat, heat is caused by friction and the oil passing thru a pipe or even water will cause heat. You are not even warming up your tractor to the temps the bigger farm tractors are even with the gear drives we are seeing 200 plus on them while working on the different makes we have in the area. Hydro's doing what they do best which is loader and PTO work normally don't see much more then the temps you are talking about unless something is wrong. Twenty years ago or so when they started putting hydro's into lawn mowers we would not see them back for much of any problems. Gear drives we would see in the shop normally about 10 years old for clutches so at that point the price difference was lost. I can mow and have a drink at the same time with a hydro and I don't need a cup holder to hold my tea while shifting a gear drive or I will have two hands for the steering wheel in tight manuvering areas.

"the dreaded hydro whine"

My hydo doesn't whine, it has on occasion complained a little, but hey, who hasn't. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
