Why Oil goes Bad

Gosh, you guys make me feel old. I'm so old I can remember when we changed oil ever thousand miles and if your car could make it to that oil change without adding any between changes, it was probably an exceptionally good and new car.:laughing: And now for several years, I'm sorry to say I've even gotten out of the habit of checking my oil since they never needed any oil added between 3k mile changes. But I'm trying to get accustomed to the 5k mile interval. However, with 3k since my last oil change, I did check the oil in the Ranger this morning. It's down nearly a fourth of a quart, so I don't guess I'll need to add any before the 5k mile change.:laughing:

We are both old, But I installed bypass oiling on two of my diesels. You could see the difference in the condition of the oil and the dipstick..Our new recommended interval is 7500k, non-severe service.

Anybody still around from when they would dip crude oil out of pools on the ground and pour that in the engine?

Not quite John but had a shop teacher that would tell tales about his late brother who lived in AK. He said there was a train line somewere in AK that would stop and suck crude out of pools to fire the boilers years ago.
