I stopped by a local Kubota dealer today to check out a GrandL. After I discussed what I would be doing with the tractor and what I was looking for, he directed me towards a MX5200. I honestly had no intention of even looking at a MX much less driving one. He handed me the key and told me to take it for a spin.

WOW is all I have to say. The machine really surprised me a LOT. Smooth as a baby's behind. The engine was responsive and the transmission was smooth. Strong tractor. The loader was also very responsive. I could not believe how much I liked that tractor. It had a nice wide stance and the size of the tractor just felt right. I actually didn't even test drive the GrandL. Shoot, the tractor even smelled good while it was running LOL. I have always been a 12 x 12 gear person and was hesitant at even looking at a HST machine with a treadle peddle (even the GrandL). Never drove one. This machine has opened my eyes up to what I might have missed out on had I not been willing to look at a HST machine and test drive it. When I finally decide to upgrade from my current tractor a MX5800 might be in my near future (it is also less expensive than all the other tractors I have been looking at). To all those that are tractor shopping, step outside the box and be willing to maybe look at something you never had any intention to look at before. I have tested many different color tractors recently and in my eyes this machine seems to be meeting all my needs minus possibly getting a cab.

Last thing, any current owners of a MX5200 or MX5800 that have some hours on the machine; what are your likes/dislikes with these tractors?

Always buy bigger than you think you need, I did the same thing when I was shopping, and stepping up one frame size was night and day for me. Ballast is your friend.

You may still wish to test drive the L6060.

It has features and feature comforts that the MX does not have. Of course not everyone needs or appreciates such features and you do pay for such.

Not sure about the MX but the L3301/3901 have the brake pedals on the same side as the hydro pedal, rendering turning brakes just about impossible to use.

The MX has the brakes on the left side. I would not want the brakes on the same side. I did sit in the GrandL 6060 and it seemed really nice as well. I will definitely test drive that one as well when I get to the buying stage. I will also state that I tried some other brand tractors with the HST and that is what initially turned me off to them. Did not like the way they drove. These Kubota's are a different machine.

I've always had and used geared tractors and equipment. Never even considered an HST tractor. On my last tractor purchase, 2 years ago, I decided I would look at any and all tractors. Drove a couple of HST tractors. I was really impressed. For me, HST works great. Of course, it all depends on what you are doing with the tractor. For me, I will never go back to a geared tractor. Additional bonus is that my wife will run the HST tractor. So, she can work on her gardening and landscaping projects while I'm doing something else.
