I'm just wondering... why do almost all forums use the
process for posting images into a message, which requires first uploading it to an online database like Photobucket, instead of just using a browse button and uploading it straight from your computer? The latter is so much quicker and simpler, but you almost never see it.

If you use the "Attachment" feature the photo is hosted by TBN.

Using the IMG tag means that YOU get to choose your host and also have the ability to put the image inline which can be handier when trying to illustrate a point.

By hosting the image yourself, you control it too. That means, should you get banned from here, you can still delete and control your photos. You can also edit the photos without having to re-upload to TBN or any other sites where you've used the pic. It can be a time saver.

Somebody has to pay for the server space to store the image file. That's why most free/public forums do not host image files for you. As soon as you upload a file, it has to go somewhere on someone's dime. Sites that allow attachments are great.

Some people post the same thing here and elsewhere (such as for a project thread that they are doing on several forums), others prefer to have control of where their images go, others are sharing the same pictures here, on Facebook, etc and it is easier to just upload once.

You can do that on TBN as well. Just attach a picture, then click on the attachment in the list that pops down from the paperclip and it is inserted inline as a thumbnail.

I give a lengthy explanation as to why I use remote image hosting (and how to do it yourself) in this post

I host remotely so I can vary the size of the images as well as put them exactly where I want them to show up in my posts. That, and my image hosting (Picasa) comes with a windows app which automatically sucks the images from my camera and uploads them online, so I don't have to do any work beyond linking to the photo in my post.

Doing it this way also allows me to only post the relevant photos, but still link to the entire photo collection for those who wish to see more detail or all of the photos in one place.

I encourage you to read the post I linked, as it is really useful to host remotely. A quick example is my sig.. those images are not possible using the uploading feature of this forum, as they are exact sizes due to the dimensions of each image.
