Saw the first snow fall on our property this weekend! We have owned the place for several years, but just now getting to be able to spend most of our time here (Northeast Tennessee). As a transplanted Floridian, I am still impressed by snow, especially at levels of less than a foot (have relatives up in Michigan where it REALLY snows...). Anyway, seen lots of snow on the ground, but was cool to see it coming down on my place for the first time. :)

So as I sit here with my coffee, listening to the geese honking on their way south, with a light dusting of snow on the fields, and the dogs playing in their yard, I wonder why I sweated moving out of the city in the first place...

I know why I am glad I live in the country. After 44 years of living in the burbs of DC and all that traffic, Sold my tiny cracker box of a home for a lot of money back during the great real estate boom of 2004. I bought a large home about an hour away out in the country and am pretty rural. Love that whatever my neighbors do doesn't affect me. As for your snow. snow happens in DC, always has and always will. I could do without last year's two footer but hey I learned my lesson and learned it well. Generator and snowblower sit in the garage and are started about once a month to make sure they are ready if need be.

If anyone had told me that I'd end up moving to the country I'd have told them they were nuts. Don't know what took me so long - love that country folks are there when ya need them and leave you alone when you don't!

We moved just 40 miles from the city up into the back woods in NC mountains.
It's 10 miles of twisty dirt roads beside a big creek to get back in here.
I see 2 maybe 3 cars a day, we love it here. Just me, my woman and a cat.
We ease down to the city and visit friends get our supplies and whatever else we need.
After about 3 hours we can't wait to be back home again.

We never lived in the really "big city" - we were in a tourist town in Florida - Daytona Beach. I used to like the races and motorcycle events, but the crowds and prices got to where it wasn't worth going for me.
The wife grew up as a country girl (dairy farm) up north, and she was all for us moving up here to get some space and quiet once I had enough of it down there.

Moving out here took some getting used to - True value and Walmart are 20 and 40 minutes away respectively, and there is no such thing as a "quick run into town." I had never been on (let alone owned) a tractor before we moved up here. I ended up having to get a garden tractor (Deere 316 kohler) as well as the "bigger" deere so we both could cut the fields at the same time without arguing over who was going to get to (err have to I mean) mow. Whole lot more than the little yard I used to have.

The only wild animals we ever dealt with were the racoons (and occasional bear) that would raid the trash at night - now we have deer, hawks, rabbits, and all sorts of creatures to watch from the back porch.

Neighbors are much nicer - and not as close as they were in Florida either.

Anyway, I'm rambling... Thanks for your comments.

I live in the country because I can. When they built a grocery story within 2 miles of my last house, I moved further out. I've lived in the city, never again.

I've wanted to live in the country ever since I was a teenager. From my first real job I began saving money to buy land. By my early twenties, all my friends had bought houses in the burbs but I was still saving everything I could to buy raw land, away from the crime, noise, congestion and gangs. When I was in my mid twenties I finally had enough and plunked down hard cash for 10 acres up in the CA foothills with a view to the Sierra mountains on one side and the Sacramento Valley on the other. That was in 1978 and I'm still here, loving every minute of it. Took me this long to get a tractor though.... :)

I grew up downtown Prague, like 15 minutes walk from the very center. In States we lived in suburbs and I hated it. Not country and not a city either, just this weird b#$%^%rd combining the worst of both.

Moved to 4 acres in the country and love it, unfortunatelly the suburbs are slowly creeping from DC to us, but so far so good.

I always say that walking out of the door in the morning merely scratching myself will not offend anybody where we live - and thats a good thing:thumbsup:

We moved out of the city in 1980, i cannot even think about a house being only 8 feet away from my home now. Rural living is best from the front porch swing, beverage in hand or the bank of a pond.{tank in texas.}I hope to retire soon and enjoy it even more.Jy.
