Tractor
New Holland TN65D
I have a New Holland TN65D 4 wheel drive. Because of the hills on my property, I would like to get wider tires and rims to improve the stability of the tractor. I currently have the stock tires and rims with the rears being 16.9 X 28, and the fronts are 9.5 X 24. I would like to go to a 24 rim on the rear and a 18 or 20 on the front. The dealer says I can get a 24 for the rear, but I need to stay with a 16.9 width on the tire. He also tells me that I can get a 20 rim on the front, but I have to use a 10.5 width tire. I would like to put at least 12.5 wide tires on the front and 19.5 wide tires on the back. He says he does'nt think that will work. He gave me a price on the rims and it came to about $ 3,000. Does anyone know anything about this topic, or have any ideas? I want to make this tractor exceptionally wide.

I assume it's for stability. Have you ever thought about spacers between the rims and the hubs? Folks on this forum have used them up to 6" on each side. That would give you a foot wider tractor. That's a whole lot cheaper than $3000. It would probably cost $500 if you find the right place.
If it's hilly, I would also consider fluid in the tires for weight. That works wonders.

Have you consider making the track wider on the front and rear? Or are you all ready at max width?

If you are not at max width, it won't cost you anything but your time. Look in your owners manual for how to go about it. The dish in the wheel can attach to the axle two different way and the rims can be attched to the dish several different ways to make the track narowwer or wider.

Yup as stated, if you aren't at max setting, dish them out all the way. If you are in a situation where you can dual it, thats a great option too.

I talked to the dealer about dishing the rims out and he told me not to dish them out all the way because of the added wear to the bearings and stress on the axles. I can understand the additional wear to the front bearings, but I am not sure I am convinced that it would have a large effect on the rear axles. The owners manual says that the rims can be dished out. So which one should I believe, dealer or manual? Has anyone here dished out the rims on a TN65D, and if so did it cause any mechanical problems with the axles or bearings? Thanks for your responses.

$3,000 pays for a lot of stress on those parts. And, the manual does not have a vested interest in your buying replacement running gear as the dealer does. Fronts don't have much influence on sidehill steadiness until you get the axle down against the stops. Widen the rears and see how you like it. And fill them as suggested if they aren't.

The rear axle will stand max tread width, no problem. Long-term use of front wheels at maximum tread width coupled with severe (loader) use can lead to axle bearing and trunnion bearing failure. Fact of the matter is, a TN has a fairly low COG to begin with, and maximizing rear track width will yield greater benefit than a wide front track. Set your rears out as far as possible, and your fronts out as far as possible with the discs still dished in. See if you need to drop another $3K to further decrease the pucker factor. I'm betting you won't.
