Are any of you using a PTO driven tiller? What is the widest you'd recommend for a 3510i?

I'd like to get a 6' one but the HP needed seems to vary from 30 to 50, depending on the manufacturer. I want to get the best bang for my buck but don't want to overload the tractor.

I would stick to a five footer for the 3510. Bigger is not always better. A six footer would strain the tractor in some soils whereas the 5 footer will allow the tractor to run at a comfortable pace. Just my opinion, but the older I get the less I want to break things..............................

I have a 3510 with a 4' tiller. I run it about 2000rpm (540rpm range) in 1st gear and it pulverizes my soil, it looks like saw dust when done. I use the slow speed because it breaks it up so good. I'm sure that if you choose lower gear it will handle a 6'er with no problems.
The pic is when I first got my tiller.
I can tell you that tillers are worth every penny you pay for them! My garden is so much better since I bought it.
Something to consider, with my 4'er I can go in between a couple rows and replant without disturbing the others that are still growing.

A lot depends on what you will be doing with the tiller. If you are only going to till the same garden (soil) over and over, every year, you will not have a problem with a six footer. But, if you are going to be tilling new patches that have not been previously tilled, stay with a smaller unit.

I have a six ft and it works very well. The only time it bogs the tractor down is on very wet clay soil when going too deep. Normal dry soil no problem at all.

It is worth the investment to pick up a 2 bottom plow, using that first before using your rotary tiller. You can incorporate a nice deep root zone, and plants do better in the deeper worked soils. Call your local Agricultural Extension Service to see what they recommend for your soil type. Their services are not just for farmers anymore. We always run a 66" tiller behind the C class tractors. It has enough hp, and the width covers the rear wheel track nicely. trac
