I noticed a hay spear is listed for the 300cx loader on a JD3520 but not a 300x loader. Has anyone used their 300x loader to lift a hay bale? I'm thinking about buying a spear for my 300x loader and don't want to waste the money if it will not work. I guess I could chain a bale to my loader and try to lift it but it is alot easier to ask here.

According to John Deere, the 300x loader is approved for these attachments:
1) Various sizes of buckets
2) Pallet forks
3) Tooth bars
The 300cx loader is approved for all listed above plus these attachments:
1) Bale spear
2) grapple bucket
3) front blades
4) 4 in 1 buckets
5) high volume buckets
6) Skid steer attachments.
It should be noted that the loader manual specifically warns agains lifting heavy round or square bales with the 300 or 300x loaders, citing potential serious injury or death from falling bales or tractor tip over. The 300cx loader has higher capacity and specifies counterweighting over and above the amount required by 300x loader by +/- 750lbs. It's probably not what you want to hear but better off following manufacturers recommendations and be safe rather than sorry.

The 300CX is "approved" for round bales--SMALL bales, and is capable of lifting them--someone did some real-world testing with one hooked up on a 990, and (bale) weight-wise it's not an issue. Do a search for 990.
2900 #'s is not a very heavy tractor for the hp & lift capacities the 3x20 is offering... for maxed-out loader work it is not (and I have one) a big enough tractor to travel far, on grades, or over rough terrain & make me feel I'm not asking a lot out of the front axle.
Massive counter-weighting on the 3 pt would be necessary for regular work with them, even more if you are considering stacking them.
As far as the 300X goes... it is a less robust loader
You can get a 3 pt spear without the fear of "nose-diving", but again, it's a low weight and stacking is not an option

I can tell you that my 300X loader would not pic up a big bale, no way, no how. It can barely lift a bucket full of dirt. I am not happy with it's lifting capacity.
