I've found that a chisel plow can break up small roots and require fewer passes after (stumping/digging) with the disc & before tilling, but still plenty of back & forth.
Some direction changes and at times a quick go-over with the LR before discing, and this isn't done to make food plots, its to open the path around the back of my ten, which gets overgrown with buckthorn & olive shoots. If things go well enough I can often skip the tiller, spread grass seed, and roll it in when clearing only 1/4 ac in a session.
I also scratch the path with disc to keep keep weeds down between mowing the cleared areas with the ZTR. Ya never know what a guy will do with a disc, but IMO having one is a must.
