2000 Power Trac 422
Has anyone bought the 5 ton winch for the 422? I was close to getting it and the sales rep talked me out of it. I got the impression that some power tracs were damaged by the 10,000 lb pull. I suspect (no test done) that if you tie the rear hitch on the 422 to a tree and try to pull with the winch that some serious damage could occur. They talked about a redesign, but a year later it was not done.

I would be hesitant to put a winch on the 400 series just because of what you stated. The tractor weighs a little over a thousand pounds. I can push stuff around that weighs that much right now. If I tried to winch anything heavier than that, the tractor would be pulled around instead of the object. So, I'd be tempted to tie it off to another tree or something. I'd probably end up tearing the tractor in half.

I thought it would be fun to have a winch to play with, but my wife said that I was too old and too married!!

I told her that I needed one to pull something big for me, but she said that I should use my hands like I have for the last 50 years!!

I said that if I had one it might save me from hurting my back. She said that that would be more likely with one than without one!!

I said that I could get a nice one from Power Trac. She was really suprised, and said that she thought that Power Trac only sold tractors!!

I said that we could share one, but she said that she wasn't into that sort of thing!!

Finally she asked: /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif "Did you say wench or winch!!??!! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The experience discussed here is not exaclty what I was looking for. I think a 5 ton wench would be a little to much for any man anyway.

Did anybody get the wife's approval to buy a winch. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I set up a Warn 6000 lb hydraulic winch with 150' cable on the top of the grapple rake on my 1845 to drag logs (and even whole trees) up to where I could grab them. It hooks to the PTO circuit and has its own control valve.

Even with the relief valve set so it won't (hopefully) break anything, I have skidded the whole 4000 lb machine with all wheels locked by the BrakeTender system. Still, if you need it, you need it. It has worked well for my purposes.

As always, we'd love to see a picture of that winch. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have a little 2000 pound winch. It works, but is very marginal as far as force. If I connect a cable about 5 or 6 feet up on a tree, I am able to pull the tractor out most of the time. If not I use the come along.

I guess no one bought the power trac winch.

Thanks for the comments.

I see that Power Trac now has a two ton winch. Has anyone tried that yet?
