We all know that the Pre-'64's are the best Winchester Model 94's made, but I'm trying to find out what would be the next best era? I have heard that it is '64 to '73, but not sure if it continued longer than that.

Any info would be appreciated.

From Wikipedia:
In the mid-to late 1950s, Winchester saw a management change which led to an extensive and extremely controversial[16] redesign of their firearms in 1964. This is regarded by many[17] as the year the "real" Winchester ceased to be, and consequently "pre-'64" rifles command higher prices than those made afterwards. Winchester itself went on to have a troubled future as competition from both the US and abroad began to decrease its sales. Although in the 1970s the company attempted to recover its reputation by bringing out the well-received SuperX-1 semiautomatic shotgun, produced along pre-1964 lines, the cost of manufacture again proved unsustainable. In 1980, the company was split into parts and sold off. The name "Winchester" remained with the ammunition making side of the company, and this branch continues to be profitable. The arms making side and New Haven facilities went to U.S. Repeating Arms, which struggled to keep the company going under a variety of owners and management teams. It finally announced plans to close the New Haven facility, the producers of the Model 1894, in 2006.

On August 15, 2006, Olin Corporation, owner of the Winchester trademarks, announced that it had entered into a new license agreement with Browning to make Winchester brand rifles and shotguns, though not at the closed Winchester plant in New Haven. Browning, based in Morgan, Utah, and the former licensee, U.S. Repeating Arms Company, are both subsidiaries of FN Herstal. In 2008 FN Herstal announced plans to produce Model 70 rifles at its plant in Columbia, SC.

It is my understanding that 1964 was the year they went from hand assembly to machine assembly of all models.

I wouldn't own a 94 without a cross bolt safety. The pre-64's are referring to the "bolt action Model 70's" as being the best, current model 70's are suppose to be on par with the pre-64. A lot of accidental firings with the old 94(drops).

Their model 73 was manufactured for 50 years, some say they are the best. But they are getting hard to find and a little pricey.

Seems like there is something wrong with the first link posted "Winchester 94-Pre 64 or not?" My Avast just caught a Threat Detection.

Otherwise, appreciate the replies.

I inherited a model 94 made in 1898 and I bought a model 94 around 1997 or so and they are worlds different. I use the newer rifle for hunting and it works fine but the quality is nothing compared to the old one. Only bad thing about the old one is it was rebored to 303 savage probably because the original caliber was getting harder to get. Too bad because that really hurt the value.

Dang yall are making me sad. I had an older top eject, 30/30 and about 3 years ago I got into an unexpected money pinch. Needed cash right now, so i sold my 30/30 and also a .357 S&W revolver that I had owned for many years. Turns out It was a knee jerk reaction, The darn credit union had screwed up my account, but when the power company says your check bounced, pay cash or sit in the dark, I got cash that day, the guns were in the truck, and it was them or my snap ons. I dont really miss the .357 but I sure miss that 30/30.

I have a Win 94 30-30 story too: It has been a few years but the wife comes home and says one of her co-workers wanted to sell his 94 and was strapped for cash, and would take $75 for it.. she wanted to know if I was interested... I said Heck yes!.. why didn't you write him a check immediately? She says "well I don't know if you were interested, and we can ask about it tomorrow" She went back to work with $75 cash the next day and of course the guy found another coworker immediately after the wife hem and hawed about it.. It took a few years for me to quit mentioning to her if someone comes up to you and wants to sell their 94 for $75, and you know them and it is legit, YOU BUY IT!.. oh well.
