Winter help for drought damaged lawn

We haven't had a good rain since July. My lawn is completely brown and I have a number of places that are bare from last winter's remodeling work. The grass planted last winter/spring is gone. This is a large lawn (at least a couple of acres) with 20+ walnut, oak and poplar trees (plus a few other species).

Should I over-seed the entire lawn now or wait for a snow? Do I need to scratch up the bare spots, seed and cover with straw now, or again wait for some moisture.

Any advice appreciated.

I'd cover with straw/hay then in the spring just before all the snow melts add seed?????

Given your location, I believe you are well past the planting dates for turf grasses (at least for those for which I am familiar). I think you are going to have to wait until next spring to reseed.

In case you don't get any replies from members in your area, check with your local Cooperative Extension office. Most states have a lawn/turf guide for homeowners. While you are there, pick up some soil-sampling kits. You can test now to determine the appropriate application rates for lime and fertilizer.*

As a followup, it looks like "dormant seeding" may be a possibility in your area.

I'm going to need to get some straw down. The trenches from last year's projects are bare and they are between the house and the woodpile.

I'll contact the local Purdue extension office for info.
