May as well get this thread started, cause if the weather folks are right, this will be huge. Effecting 28 states, they say. Hard to predict specifics, as this one may be dangerous in a narrow band, leaving others untouched 100 miles away. Stayed tuned.

Got a feeling this one is going to be bad.

They are calling for 1.5" of ice here in Northern Indiana followed by 10" to 24" of wet heavy snow and 35 mph winds. Cant wait.

I think the building codes will be changing in the Southern states now that they have the weight of snow to deal with on their roofs. Shouldn't have mentioned that because the insurance companies and lawyers may be reading this and more laws will go into effect.....:laughing:......

I can handle the snow. But not with a 1.5" of ice and the 35MPH winds with it. We're only supposed to get a little piece of this. Hope you guys up north come through OK.

Here in the Philippines, forcast is continued hot (90 degrees each day), possible drifting of sand on the South China Sea beaches. Don't have to deal with Virginia weather for another two weeks. Cold showers and warm drinks continue.

May be on to something. Up here in New England, I've been in several commercial buildings the last couple of weeks checking roofs and clearing roof drains, It's not really practical to try and remove snow from 10-20,000 sq ft roof.
These are steel framed roofs, some wide flange (I-beams) and some bar truss. These roofs have 2-3 feet of snow on them now, not the heaviest snow but there's this huge storm coming with rain and sleet. I'm sure these roofs are near their rated design capacity now. double the weight on them with rain and sleet and they will be well into there safety factors beyond their load ratings.

When rain falls on a snow covered flat roof, the vast majority of it never makes it to a drain, it's the perfect recipe for problems, from just leaks to worst case, collapse.

Weather report for mid-Michigan says "storm of a decade" starting late tomorrow afternoon, predictions of 10 to 16 inches of snowfall and high winds. I am as ready as I can possibly be, however.

BP,
this one isn't supposed to hit your neck-o-the woods is it. With no storm even started to form yet it will be interesting to see what does develope. Only good news so far is that we are not supposed to get any ice on the IL, WI border, just a chance for some snow and wind over two to three days. may get 10 - 14" over that time period so it is still a lot less than the east coast has been getting.
