My cistern is basically an enclosed concrete box with an access hatch and is located under the laundry room in our house. As a result I cannot use a mechanical float system to indicate the water level in my cistern. I came across a product made by Rain Harvesting from Australia called "Rain Alert" that meets my needs. Rain Harvesting recently set up a distribution system for North America and some of its products have been redesigned to meet North American standards (e.g. 120VAC). The Rain Alert system uses a transmitter mounted on the top of a tank, or in my case in the hatch opening at the roof level of my cistern, and a remote receiver. The receiver has dip switches that can be set to match the depth of the tank (cistern) up to a max. of 10 feet. The receiver plugs into a ordinary wall outlet and can be located up to 150 feet from the transmitter. The receiver has 10 bars to indicate the relative depth of water in the tank. There is an early warning "low level" indicator and an "empty" indicator. The Rain Alert system isn't for everybody as it is rather expensive at about $150 but it beats having to dip the cistern to know how much water is in it. The relevant web site is rainharvesting.com.

Cistern Supply Co.(cisternsupply.com) sells inexpensive gages if that one doesnt work out. The cheapest measures one point for a low level and has a light on top of tank or tank cap that is very visible. Lets you know when to order water@$40.00 complete. Needs 4 AA's and lasts for half a year on those batteries.

A long time ago, when I serviced pumps, there was a way to put a hose down to the bottom of the tank and a pressure gauge on the top. You blow the water out of the hose and the water/air pressure pushing back on it would register on the gauge. There is a formula some where that will tell you the water depth to pressure reading. Pretty simple and very cheap.

I have a cistern and was looking for a way to measure the level of it. I checked online everywhere and I was disappointed with the products. I would still have to physically go check a unit. There is a new product that just came out that you can check the level on your smart phone or computer anywhere. I haven't bought one yet but they sell for 150 bucks. Well worth the money for me so I don't have to freeze checking anymore. Check them out at ptlevel.com

I notice this topic is a little old now. I guess everyone found a way to monitor the water in their cistern

Wireless would be nice. My monitor is old-school, a fiberglass bicycle flag pole.

The only problem with wireless is then there is maintenance with changing batteries. Being able to check the level remotely from anywhere is key. The flag pole is a good idea.
