The latest Northern Tool catalogue has a wireless intercom that they claim has a range of up to 1000 feet. I really need an intercom between my milkhouse, my goat barn and my house. It's several hundred feet between my house and the two buildings. It's not uncommon for me to need help with something, and then I have to stop what I'm doing, and walk back to the house to get help. If I had an intercom that I could just buzz my wife with, she could answer, and find out what help I might need, without me having to walk back to the house. I need something that doesn't have to have both stations on, like a walkie talkie. I think that the wireless intercom would be great if it works.

Does anyone have any experience with the Northern Tool wireless intercom, or any other ones? Radio Shack has one that transmits through your house wires. All three buildings are on the same electircal service, so I wondered if that intercom would work, but no one at my local Radio Shack could tell me.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!!!

We use the walkie-talkie type radios. I think they are called "FRS". Leave one in the charger turned on and drop the other one in your pocket. They are pretty small and have enough channels and sub-channels(I'm sure there is a better name) that you shouldn't have problems with interferrence. Ours has a call button that creates quite a racket on the other end so it's hard to miss a call.

Intercoms are fixed units and if you have one in the goat barn you may not hear it if you are outside doing "round'em up" duties. Seems like most of the time it is my "social secretary" telling me I have a phone call rather than me calling her.

I use my cell phone for this purpose , all the time. call the wife or kids , 300ft away. When I'm running equipment out back , I keep my phone buttoned in my shirt pocket so I hear it and feel it vibriate, get my call that dinner is ready, or time to get cleaned up because we are going somewhere.

I bought three intercoms from Radio Shack, then put one in the shop on a different wiring from the house. I placed the other two in the house. Worked great.

I used them for a couple of years until I replaced them with a set of cordless phones that has an intercom feature. Now I don't have to walk back to the house when I get a phone call. The wife just "buzzes" me to pick up the phone.

I also used a pair of walkie talkie until I dropped one and broke.

BTW if you want these Radio Shack intercoms, send me a PM.

Mornin Rich,
Sounds like your kinda set on the intercom thing, but I do have some inexpensive Uniden walkie talkies that have a alert button on them that makes a bunch of noise so the party on the other end is notified /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif The other nice feature is that they have an 8 mile range.

Hopefully things are well on the farm!!!
