I would ask Robbie or Denis but I believe the smallest mini is a 16k machine. But I may be wrong.

Yes for the DAH series the 50 is too small. I looked quickly at the Deere site and the 75 in the smallest I would try. Now we do have a DAV line of excavator heads that are rotary style cutters. They are for smaller excavators such as yours. The 8 ton machine's are what's needed to handle the weight and put out enough hyd power to mulch productivtly.

Oliver, I looked into this myself for a 50d. It seems that for a 6t machine a flail type head is the best most productive choice. Try US mowers or loftness for a good flail head. You'll be suprized how large of material a flail with hammer flails can handle.

Hello Oliver,

Of course, the Loftness and the US Mower models look less productive. But in this case, it's not only because of the technology they used. A 40-something-hp machine can only do that much volume of mulching.

I see two solutions to get more productivity:

1st:
You put a small power unit on the JD 50. That would probably make your JD longer-tail, helping manoeuvre heavier head. Or one could try to crimp the power unit on top of the excavator, but that involves looking into security issues (visibility, non-obstructed escape from cab in case of emergency). In either case, I haven't mention the cost of such a power unit. I'd guess a 60-hp power pack wouldn't be much less than 30000$. Of course, you could build one yourself with 2nd-hand parts, but then you're investing your time in it. In the end, I'm not sure how viable a solution that would be, unless you find a niche market for very small excavator-mounted mulching operations.
2nd:
We build a lighter model: smaller teeth, smaller diameter drum, +/- 50 cc motor, lighter frame. But for this, we would need to see if there's possible interest from more than a few persons for such little beast. A new mold, even for smaller blades, is far from being cheap, let alone engineering to design the head...

Readers, that would be of interest to you? Email me at frederic.denis@deniscimaf.com. Depending on the amount of feedback I get, I'll pass the request to engineering.

Let me know what you think :)

Fredric, I've emailed Robbie a few times about a head for a 50 sized machine. I wouldn't consider the power unit since the 50d is a zero tail swing unit and putting on the power unit would make the machine too mulching specific. What I've found is that putting all your eggs in the mulching basket is the fastest way to have your machine repo'd and bankrupt. The smaller equipment user needs to be diversed and at the same time niche market specific. I would be interested in a 50 sized head as long as it's some what cost competative. I believe the last time I checked the us mower head was 6-8k. So to be cost effective your true mulching head would have to be no more than say
12-16k. Now I don't know if that's reasonable from a production standpoint.

Oliver,

I have a Mustang 12,500 lb excavator with a brush hound 30HD. It is decent for it's size. It works good in briars and light growth up to 2 inches for harwood, maybe 3 inches for softwood. I recently used it to finish off some steep sections and it did well in 3-4 inch poplar (aspen) which is an easy tree to mulch. It is slow compared to the ASV skid steer/Fecon, the excavator flail mower will do .5 acres to the ASV 2 acres per day. It becomes a good second machine but If it's the only machine it would be best to step up one size (18K lb machine) and get a better head with fixed blades.
