my 4300 has been having intermittent starting issues. cranks good, fuel solenoid sounds like it engages, won't start. in the past, i've done various things which would cause it to start, but i think thay are just coincidental...probably the thermistor going bad...but then it starts all of a sudden when i've really done nothing to correct a problem.

anyway, when it fails to start, i can't get the side panels off of the engine w/ the loader on to even see what's going on. is there a way to remove the loader when it's not running? seems kind of strange that i can't get the side panels off w/ the loader on, but i can't get the loader off w/ the tractor not running....vicious circle of never being able to fix it!

the loader is a 420.

thanks.

What happens when you try to get the side panels off? I have a 4300 with 430 FEL and there is an inch of clearance between the panels and the FEL. That's just enough to get the panels off after loosing the fasteners and then lifting upward. Don't know if it's possible to remove the FEL without the motor running. IMO that would not be a DIY project. If I were you I'd just call a JD dealer and say "come fix the starting problem".

If you have another loader handy you can use it to either pick the loader off or at least lift it up to access the engine. Other than that.....dynamite.

i might be able to remove the starter side panel, but the fuel solenoid side has the loader hoses which are between the frame and the panel...basically giving no clearance. now that i think about it, maybe if i cut the ties holding the hoses to the frame, they might drop out of the way.

even if i was willing to pay someone to fix it (which i'm not...i'll figure it out!), the problem is so intermittent, it is impossible to replicate. it just happens out of nowhere, and then goes away just as randomly. gotta be a loose connection or a flaky thermistor.

just thought there might be a technique to remove the loader w/o it running. i mean, it's had to have been necessary at some time in history...but as stated, just need more equipment. can never have too much equipment.

Trying to remember how the 430 loader detaches. IIRC, it works like the 70A. You might try unhooking the latches and operating the loader valve in the lift boom position. This could let the loader parking stand drop to the ground. Then, while holding the loader valve in the lift boom position, crank the engine over. You might be able to pump enough fluid into the boom cylinders to raise them up off their seats and clear the front tires. Then disconnect the hydrualic hoses and roll the tractor backward out from under the loader.

Now, if the 430 does not work the same way a 70A does, then disregard all the above as nothing more than mindless babble....

Use the starter motor to drive the hydraulics. Hold the levers while you turn the key. No more than 10 seconds or so at a time.

Do yourself a favor and replace the electronic fuel selinoid controle module part# LVA11884 before doing all that extra work, right behind the fuse panel---actually just hold steady pressure one way on it and see if it fires up. very similar story as yours:thumbsup:

The side panels come off my 4300 with the FEL on.
(your idea of cutting the FEL hoses free, as well as just disconnecting the hoses will move them out of the way of the right side panel if they interfere).

Also, once you get it to "intermittent" start, then remove the FEL while it is running. Then be prepared to check out the problem when it doesn't start the next time. ;)

If another source of hydraulic pressure hose can be positioned alongside to hook to the "raise" cylinders, then the FEL frame can be removed. Would just take one.

I think I would try the starter on the tractor as suggested. ;)
