won\'t start

I have a YM1500D that will not start. It has plenty of compression and I've bled the fuel system 7 times. It turns over normally but will not try to start running. Any ideas?

Re: won\'t start

First a disclaimer-I've owned a diesel for 3 days now, and have had no issues with it. That said, I've been fiddling with engines for a long time....

If you've checked the fuel lines, bled them, made sure the filter looked OK (and no little white "marbles" (water)), check the air intake / filter as well for obstructions.

Just a thought...

Re: won\'t start

Eugene, does your machine have a manual fuel shutoff? Check the lever below the injection pump to make sure the fuel is on. You say you bled it and I'm assuming you bled it at the filter as well as the bleeder at the injection pump. If you crack the injector lines at the injectors do you have fuel coming out while cranking? If not it may be in the injection pump or the feed to the pump. If you're getting fuel out of the bleeder at the pump than feed should be o.k. If you get fuel to the injectors, you can check them by removing an injection line and installing to the pump in the opposite direction so you can install your injectors to the line and crank the engine, catch the fuel with a cofee can or something and keep your skin away from the high pressure fuel. If you have a good atomized spray pattern from the injector that's good, if the fuel dribbles out, comes out in 1 or more seperate streams or does'nt come out at all, then that's a bad injector. Are you getting any smoke from the exhaust while cranking? If so what color, how heavy? If you're not getting any smoke at all that's most likely lack of fuel. If you have a fuel solenoid that powers the fuel on, the problem could also be there, any saftey switches on that tractor?

Re: won\'t start

When you are bleeding it, is fuel squirting out the connection to the injectors? If it is getting fuel to that point under enough pressure to spray when you loosen the fitting then the motor should start. If it isn't squirting there when you are cranking, then keep bleeding it. Yes, I know it will be messy... If it is getting fuel to that point and it still doesn't start then start to suspect your fuel quality.

kubmech, can you elaborate on this a little bit? Is this different than removing an injector and cranking to test? I can't quite picture your procedure.
Thanks, Norm

Re: won\'t start

Thanks Fellas,

Am getting fuel as far as injectors but haven't checked beyond that. It just dribbles out, no pressure. Not getting any smoke at all. Have turned fuel shutoff both ways.

Re: won\'t start

Norm, Yes, same thing. What I mean is; The injection lines are steel tubes and don't take kindly to being bent. In order to avoid the problem of having to bend the tube in order to watch the spray pattern. Remove the lines and clamps that hold the tubes together. Remove the injectors. Then pick one of the inj. tubes and reinstall on the pump. Route the tube so you have room to install an injector to the line (usually outboard of the engine). Crank the engine over and observe the spray pattern. Kind of hard to explain without visual aids, I hope that makes it a little clearer. And yes it'll be a bit messy with the fuel coming out of the open pump fittings. Most people don't have the luxury of having an injector tester in there garage, this test will show spray pattern of each injector. It wont tell you what pop pressure is and it's tough to check leakage, but will check general function.

Re: won\'t start

Eugene, Keep in mind the injection pump does'nt make the pressure, the injector makes the pressure by restricting the flow of fuel from the pump till pressure builds to overcome the spring in the injector then releases the fuel charge into the combustion chamber. So with the lines cracked the fuel will just "dribble" out.

Re: won\'t start

And Eugene, don't give up. We see this problem on compacts a couple of times a year. 10 to 1 it is just a matter of bleeding and cranking till you finally flush out that troublesome air bubble. We've all been there. Use a fresh battery or jump to a car. Pull the compression release to really get the motor cranking fast. On mine the fuel flows when the handle in the filter is pointed down. We've seen several that had a little bubble in the fuel filter that was the source of the problem. You have to bleed the system at the filter, the pump, and then the injector in that order....again....and again.....and again..

Re: won\'t start

On my 186D there is a wire that runs back by the left floor board that is part of the safety system. There is a quick connect right down there and if it is disconected the tractor will not start. There are probably other things about the safety system that can keep a tractor from starting.
