I am in the process of rebuilding a wood splitter that we built about 23 years ago. I would like to add a boom to the splitter. Currently I have a mobile "engine puller" that I use to lift the wood onto the splitter, but I would rather have one as a permanent attachment. The majority of the wood I split is 36"-60" Poplar plus some large Elm, Black Locust, and Box Elder. We take the big stuff no one else wants or can handle. I am thinking of using a car or truck axle as the pivot for the mast, and would like to leave the brakes intact when mounting it, so they could be hooked up and used to control the speed of the swing as well as to be able to lock the boom in position. I will use both hydraulics as well as a winch on the boom for draging the wood to the splitter as well as raising it up for placement on the splitter. My question is has anyone else built a boom like this, and what is the best way to mount the axle/hub assembly, and still be able to use the brakes? I'd really rather not "re-invent the wheel" if I don't have to.

Put your boom on permanent, it doesn't have to swing at all. Being that you have a cable and a pulley at the top, you can take the line out at any direction and it will lead into the winch. If your winch has a brake builtin, or if it worm drive you don't need a brake.
I use a hyd winch for mine and it holds the block wherever I stop it. I think the hyd in the motor alone would hold the line. It might bleed off slowly, but I don't think it would affect your production.

I have posted this one before, hope it gives you an idea. It will take a block up to 6' or so and I can pull logs to me if necessary. Kind of handy that way if they are in a log deck.

The one thing you might consider when making your boom is to have some pivot as you will not always be perfectly level. By raising or lowering the boom a bit, it will always center on the knife.

Welcome to the forum Tinker, lots of good stuff in here.

If you notice my knife, it is a T. Splitting large dia wood this works well as it only takes off the bottom of the block instead of making two pieces to have to pick as you break it down. In this fashion, I just take a couple of pushes off the bottom, rotate the block as I work it down. Not much resplit that way.
