hi this is my first post.i am hoping to get a little help.i built a log splitter it has a new dalton hydraulics 2 stage 16 gpm pump,a new prince ls3000 valve and a new 4"x24" cylinder from tractor supply powered by an 11 hp honda.the problem i'm having is my splitter seem to be straining the ram will start to come out at about the speed i would expect bu after about 5" of travel it slows way down and puts a load on the engine, i thought my pusher was binding so i removed it but with just the ram to push it does the same.any ideas?

Welcome
From my very small set of experience
You do have enough oil in it, right check res.
Cylinder is binding somehow run it on compressed air with no load should move easy.
No junk in the hoses?
You did not use teflon tape on the pipe threads did you?
I am just guessing.

Install a pressure gage and tell us some pressures.

Check the pressure at the IN port of the log splitter valve.

Do you have the valve connected correctly. Is the return path open?

Remove the rod end hose from the valve and place in a bucket and extend the cyl. If it goes to the end, there is a blockage in the return line.

Are you using QD's?

Does the pump draw hydraulic fluid from a reservoir, or are you recirculating the flow from the cylinder back to the pump? This may sound silly, but I've seen it done with dangerous results.

i did nt use tape and all my lines are new.i'll pull that line and check its movement i'm wonder about my suction line the guy at napa talked me into using heater hose as it would be cheaper i'm wondering if it is collapsing and if that could cause my problem.i have about 41/2 gal of fluid in my resivoir.i'm not sure what qd's are

If you are going to use heater hose, some of them have a stainless coil in them to keep them from collapsing.

Is the hose still round or flat with the engine running?

it stays round.i checked my hoses and they seem to be hooked up right i have a 1/2 ' line feeding the pressure from my pump to the in port on my valve both work lines are 1/2" and my return line is 3/4" it runs from the out port to my filter.i'll have to plumb a gauge in to get pressures.

You could eliminate the cyl by removing the hoses off the cyl ports and place in a bucket and see if the pump and valve is working correctly.

With the valve in neutral, is the fluid flowing with no problem?

i got to looking at the specs on some of my components and think i may have found my problem the filter i have in my return line is rated at 200 psi and my pump on the 16 gpm side puts out about 500 psi could my filter be causing my problem?

All hydraulic pumps are rated at 1,200 R.P.M., and 100 P.S.I.,
as a base line measurement figure for flow rate.

The filter could be bypassing to the point it is
blown internally so that would be an issue.

You should contact the folks you purchased the pump
from to determine if it is preset with the proper pressure
settings to ensure the second stage engages properly.

You should not have more than 100 P.S.I., exit via the
return line to tank with the valve in the open center position.
