Thanks for posting the findings. It's good feedback to all of us.
Let me make a note of that to myself. And add it to the stack of notes with the same message that I have written many times. :thumbsup:NOTE TO SELF:
Don't borrow,
Don't lend.
Happens every time.
How would the borrower's misuse cause the nut to come off? Wouldn't it have come off with the owners equivalent use just the same?
Bruce
Yes, in this case the nut was going to come off at some point. But, the owner might have realized something was wrong sooner and prevented more damage. Someone not familiar with a piece of equipment might not recognize the change in operation and just keep working it until it was completely toast. How would the borrower's misuse cause the nut to come off? Well, some of you guys were correct.
There were enough conflicting indicators the mechanic had to understand, we agreed, take the ram apart.
The ram was taken apart. The nut came off of the shaft, what a mess. That is where the metal in the filter came from. Probably could be rebuilt.
However, purchased a new 5" x 24" ram for $170.
All this for some split wood.
What size was your ram before? Usualy 5in is for real 28ton or a box store 32-35ton splitter. Going with a bigger ram can really slow things down.
Its not all for a bit of split wood its so you dont have to do it by hand.
Theres a hydraulic ram calculator for all that stuff. Cycle time and tons. My 22gpm pump on a 15hp with a 5in ram cycles in about 11-12 sec if i remember right.
