Greetings...not a tractor question specifically, but does anyone know about "Yard man" log splitters? A neighbor of mine has a 20ton "Yard Man" splitter for sale in front of his house for $750...I have been needing a splitter for a while, and this one is just very convenient...the sign says he paid $1000 this summer and barely used it..it looks like new, but don't know if that is a decent brand or not.

Anyone?

I can tell you the name probably carries through, with the yard man name on it, it probably is a cheap splitter. Look at the engine and hp. That might tell you something. For 750.00 what do you get anymore for that kind of money.

I don't know if this is any help, but I'm pretty sure I've seen Yard Man mowers/garden tractors at Home Depot.

yea, you are probably right, and anyway the decision was made easy for me, since I drove by yesterday and it was already gone.

Anyone recommend some *good* names to look for in a splitter? Any use a 3Pt splitter? Seems like its not the best use of a tractor, unlike some implements.

are the fanciest ones I have seen, but they are pricy. I would think your JD could provide flow for an engineless model with power to spare. Why have another motor to keep up?

And they will build most anything you want, special order.

If anyone else has a less pricy but good brand, hydraulic powered from the tractor, I am game, too. Timberwolf is a bit expensive, but, does anyone have one?

You might look for 3ph splitter discussions in the archives. The main issue is the gpm oil flow of many tractor hydraulics make for pretty excessive cycle times on the splitter. It would be a good idea to check the cycle time of a splitter, given the gmp rating of your tractor's hydraulic pump. You might find that the 'standing around time' wouldn't be acceptable to you. Dedicated splitters can run bigger pumps off fairly small engines since all the engine has to do is run the pump.

Yardman isn't sold at Home Depot, it's sold at Lowe's.

20 tons is a little light. I have one that I got through our pawn shop that's 25 tons. I would prefer a 30 ton unit. The 25 ton has trouble with the big log sections.

You may want to try looking in some of your local pawn shops. Make sure you start, run, and split with it before you buy it. At our my wife's pawn shop they guarantee everything they sell. A lot of pawn shops don't do that. So Buyer be ware.

I am using a Bushhog 3pt splitter. Bushhog does not make spitters anymore but I found one at a dealer closing down after a big fire. For $400 dollars I just could not go home without it. (Thats what I told the wife) I have a B21 and it puts out 13.1 gpm hydraulic flow. I can't say the spitter is fast, but it sure does the job. This is the only spitter I have owned and it is rated at 12 tons. From what we have run through it I don't see how you could stop it. Does any one know if a 12 ton, 20 ton, ect. rating is just that? I think I trust Bushhog and I wonder about some of the other ratings I see at some of the discount stores. It is so hard to tell if you are comparing apples to apples these days.

A couple of weeks ago I stopped by my local dealer to get prices on 3PT splitters and he steered me towards a used one that had come in recently..the price $550. Couldn't pass it up either. By comparison, a new standalong model was easily north of $1000 and (according to the dealer anyway) not nearly as powerful as the one I got.

Haven't been able to find any name on it, but appears to be in great shape and works just fine. Lately it has been one of my most used implements.

Not sure of its ratings, but it will split *anything* that I put under with ease, including 24inch cherry/maple logs and even if they are all twisted and turned.

Have to say that I am tremendously happy with it. I look a little closer next time and see if I can find any brand or ratings on it.
