Wood stave corn crib

Here's a photo of an old wood-stave corn crib I just bought. Going to move it to my 1886 farm next week. It'll look good setting next to my old barn and machine shed, both constructed in 1886.
The owner said that back in the 60's his dad put up a concrete silo and they took this one down, cut it in two and made two "sheds" out of it. Its actually a wood-stave silo, but silo's are much taller so I'm calling it a corn crib. You can see the concrete one on the barn in the back of the photo. That barn was built in the 1870's according to the farmer I bought this from.

When I bought this place it had one of those, but everything except the iron hoops was missing. :laughing: Oh, there was also some tin roof jammed into a birch tree that had grown a "knee" over it.

Should look good next to your barn. Have fun.

I think this one was bought and built in the 30s or 40s. It needs about a foot cut off the bottom, but I'm hesitant to do that. The owner explained to me how its constructed. There's a steel wire rod running around the top and bottom inside. They wired the boards to that to put it up. Every fifth or sixth board is wired to those. Put boards up until you run out, then put the rings on the outside. I'll reverse that to take it down. More pictures to follow.

Does it have some dry-rot near the bottom of the boards? Is that what you mean about needing a foot cut off at the bottom?

Dry rot, or just water seeping in around the concrete pad over the years. There's a 4" hole that some animal has chewed in the back and it smells of coon skat inside. I think cutting off 6" would clear it up, but then the holes for the dryer vents would be cut in half.

The top of the staves are cut at an angle to fit the roof. The roof is self-supporting and just sits on top of the barrel and held down with straps from the roof to the sides of the barrel. I don't want to turn them upside down because there is a 12" hole in one side for the dryer vent tube, and I have to use all the staves so that it fits the circumference of the roof. I'm thinking I'll leave it alone and put a circle of wood around the inside bottom, an apron over and around the bottom. Presently, it does have lead flashing around the bottom crack next to the concrete pad, but its about gone and is badly deteriorated .
